Fiberglass bumper source
Does anyone know of a source for a stock style fiberglass bumper that would have the rubber top pad molded as part of the fiber glass?

GT Racing makes two types now: a "GT" style with the slot for a front cooler already cut out, and a stock style with no slot (you can cut your own). The quality of their stuff is very nice. The parts come in a white gelcoat and do require some minor fitting/mounting fab work, as does all race fiberglass.

I have a carbonfiber rear bumper (early style) on my 914, with the top pad section painted flat black and the rest of the bumper painted silver, it looks just like a factory steel unit.
No idea where to buy 'em, i got my used.

Round numbers, you're looking at $500 or so for a F/R pair, new.
Kind of spendy, unless like me you have some nice chrome bumpers on the car that you can sell to make it about a "wash"...and drop easily 40lbs or so from the car in the process. If you're not trying to shed weight then there is really NO reason to go this route. You can find painted bumpers really easily and decent chrome ones are not that expensive either if you have time to search around.

Interesting...I just talked to Hank from GT-Racing. He said the requests for 914 stuff are suddenly WAY up.
Surprise, surprise ... he said the new HSR 2 liter class and just overall success & cost-effectiveness of the cars is driving up their popularity in club racing and thus the demand for race parts. That will "hopefully" mean more selection and better prices before too long...kewl.

I just installed some of GT-Racing's set of bumpers. The front was the unit with no oil cooler cut out. I was backdating a '75 model to the early look so I was missing whatever mounted the old bumpers -- brackets, "dogbones", and holes.
One of the fiber versions I got from them had no provisions for mounting...either front or back...I can't remember. The other piece had little fiberglass bracket places that were too tall -- at least according to the body shop. I'm not totally pleased with their rigged mounting solutions but it was hard to argue since the fiberglass versions came with very little. I also ordered new fog light grilles from Pelican. They were the plastic/unpainted versions and they required some extensive grinding and shaving to fit inside the fiberglass version's cutouts. When I went to pick the car up, the body shop had mistakenly shot the bumpers body color. It really updated the cars look...like some kind of Acura. But I just couldn't deal with it so I had them reshoot them black. I also had the top part (the section that would have been rubber) shot with a rough texture finish. I did the valence, rockers and front spoiler the same way and I'm really impressed at how cool that looks. |

Hey Kevinseven you got any pics of your car? I have a 75 also and I'm not sure if I like the big black bumpers. Thanks

Uhoh, I was gonna paint my bumpers body color; maybe I'd better do some Photochopping on the computer first.
Another idea is a nice bright "trim" color for the bumpers and rockers, like maybe a speed-yellow. Of course mine is turning into a race car so it can look a bit more...extreme...than your typical street driver. The guy I bought it from has a super sweet V8 car that is a midnight blue, with a big yellow race stripe down the middle, and huge yellow powded coated Fuchs. I don't recall what he did on the bumpers though. Oh yeah -- you are right about the "brackets" on the front bumper. I had to cut out a half-moon section to clearance it properly. I am not running fog lights so I made simple block-off plates from aluminum sheet to cover up the holes. (Should be more aerodynamic than grilles.)
