i was thinking about putting solid aluminum engine mounts in place of the rubber ones.does anyone know if that will damage anything or would it be ok to do that?

Solid mounts are great for racing, but in a street car:
1. transmits engine/transmission noise to the body and to your ears. 2. Possibility of cracking the engine case mounts or trans mounting ears from transmisssion of vibrations/shock to the case(s) from the mounts.

Even a lot of racers use the "Club Sport" (911) style engine mounts. The solid trans mounts are fine if you don't mind the vibrations/noise but solid engine mounts are kind of over the top.

On both our 914s I use solid trans mounts and stock front mounts. The tranny needs to be fairly solid for better shifting and the front mounts will absorb vibration well. Good luck.

Speakin' of engine mounts, if my engine jumps when accelerating hard from a dead stop is it both engine and tranny mounts that need replacing?

Under hard acceleration, the engine tries to twist itself around and flip like a pancake (kinda). I would suspect:
1. loose bolts 2. Engine rubber mounts separated. I believe it would be the left one, facing the car from the front. The rear is pretty solid when the bolts are tight. Maybe the rubber portion had deteroiated though.

Engine mounts, all the way. Could be the bolts in the brackets for the mounts coming out. BTDT on both of those... You will also notice that, under hard braking, the gear shift lever moves on its own quite a bit.
