Had my teener weighed today

Dropped by a scrap-metal yard that I visit sometimes. Owner was there and I asked if I could weigh my car. They have a huge truck-sized scale in front of the office.

2,150 lbs, complete in daily driver configuration, 1973 914/6 conversion.

Guy told me they had zeroed the scale in the morning. I don't know how accurate it is, but it's a number I'm quite happy with !

That's probably pretty accurate. My race car, with me inside weighs 2278#, but it has a roll cage and fuel cell, but no spare.

That sounds close; my ravenna car was 2142 in street config (w/o driver).

I think I have you all beat, but I am a long way from street legal. Last weekend I cut off the driver side front fender and this weekend I'll be hanging the fiberglass replacement. This will probably get me down below 1700 pounds.

Brad has said before that is pretty easy to get a streeter to 1950. Go with early doors (no door impact beams), aluminum wheels, and early bumpers to start with.

Something is fishy about his car weight.

That sounds a little light for a 6 conversion.

Normally the 6 adds 300 or so pounds to the car.

Its close enough.

I agree... that does appear to be little light for a six. I had to have a 3.0 six shipped about a year ago and I was surpized to find out how heavy it was. It was almost as heavy as a V8.

I worked as a weigh master for a scrap yard many years ago and they had to have the state come out to calibrate their scales quarterly. I don't know if every state falls under the same rulings but it was probably right on.....

I sort of figure something like that: our home scales all have "not legal for trade" but this big scale certainly is used for trading. So there has to be some regulation of it.

Here is a frightening revelation:

I was certified weights and measure for the state of Texas back several moons ago when I did grocery store computer and scale systems. I even took the gas testing exam and past that. I could check gas stations for fuel content.

Red face

Ya! they are amazing revelations... to go back in ones past and look at the different, strange & odd jobs you've had. I worked in a briquet making factory for a year in N. Dakota. Gawd! did I ever come home BLACK. Lucky for me & my wife we had an old clawfoot BLACK bathtub. Then there was the oil well thing... only lasted a week on that rig! Finally settled into something more secure; dumping poop baskets from within sewage lift stations (by hand)! glamorus, eh?

a way you can weigh your 914 at home with a tire pressure guage and a shop square. simply measure your tire footprint in square inches and multiply by pressure. all four measurements should differ slightly unless you are perfectly balanced. add the 4 numbers to get the total weight. is`nt arithmatic a lovely tool?

HATE MATH

Maybe that is why I like German cars. Metric tools. No fractions
I think the wiegh scales are accurate enough. I was just curious as to what the little bugger would tip at with all the junk removed. Some once stated that every 10lbs equaled 1 HP. Not to mention better stopping, and lateral wieght transfer.

I might try that next week. Say, remove the spare, the passenger seat, carpeting, junk etc . . .

Will let you know.

less is dangerous

SOme things you want to have on your car if you get in a fender bender. I recent post talked about the spare tire being an intergeral part to the crumple zone. That afternoon I bolted mine down.

I just found the last corner-balance worksheet for my redorange car -- it was 2031lbs w/o driver in the PO's config.

I have some some fairly extensive stripping/lightening so I would be surprised if it is much > 1900 at this point. It is still street legal; otherwise a bunch more could come off (lights, wipers, horns are still on).

Our cages add about 125lbs to the car.
