Cleaning 2.0 Injectors

Trying to wake up my 74, 2.0 from an approximately seven year sleep. Fuel is totally bad and am in the process of draining and removing tank for replacement and or cleaning/restoration. Plan to replace all fuel lines. Can the injectors be cleaned out of the car with some sort of cleaner/solution/thinner? Can they be checked prior to installation? Car was running when laid up. Anything else I should be doing before a start-up?

Hey Bob, when I revived mine after more than 12 years of hibernation I completely restored the fuel system. Used the POR-15 fuel tank restoration kit (which turned out very nice), completely replaced all fuel lines (including installing SS through tunnel), and had the injectors professionally serviced. There are a bunch of places that will service them for $15 to $20 per injector. I used Mr. Injector (Mr Injector - Home) and I was happy with the results. They'll give you a full report on the before and after and this definitely helps if you're having to toubleshoot other things (like ECU's, cylinder head temp sensors, etc. etc.).

Remove the injectors and have them ultrasonically cleaned.

+1 for mr injector. came back looking like new and owner was great to work with. $16/injector when i had them done last year.

there is a leak test to be preformed also if they don't pass in the bin they go.

I woke up a 1.8 1974 914 from a 5+ year (my guess, probably more) it had fuel line blocked from gummy residue in the tank. Cleaned the tank and lines. Removed the injectors an tested them in the car but no fuel was coming out. Cleaned them with injector cleaner and tested the again in the car. Fuel started coming out of the tip, so I installed them and put more fuel and injector cleaner in the tan and ran the engine a few minutes every weekend. It got better after a month. Before taking the engine out (for hell hole repair) it ran well and it would idle perfectly.
