Hi,
I need to remove the gearbox from my car and was thinking it might be possible to do it without completely dropping the motor. Will this save time or will I be swearing loudly? Thanks |

It can be done without much headache.
Probably the biggest thing I can offer you help wise would be: remove the rear tranny mounts completely. The 13mm nuts and bolts. I can pull the entire intermediate plate assembly out of the case without removing the axles or starter. You have to be EXTRA careful going back in so you dont rip the main shaft seal, but its totally doable. B |

Alex, yeah it is possible.. I just did this to change the flywheel oil seal. Put a supporting block/stand under the back of the engine otherwise it'll hang badly on the motor-mounts due to the leverage.
Cheers BTW -Alex,I just noticed you're from the UK too.....are you going to be at the 914 International trefen at Bournemouth this weekend? Check http://www.geocities.com/targagirl/914/booking.htm Last edited by thesey914; 09-12-2002 at 08:45 AM.. |

Fill us in on what you're trying to do. Removing the tranny is not a big deal. Support the engine not matter what you're doing, since you will be removing the rear mounting point as Brad said.

This is absolutely the way to go if you are only working on the transmission or clutch. I'll have to try the method of dropping the transmission mounts as well. Aligning the drive shaft and transmission "ears" with the mounts installed took a bit of doing.
