I am sick; help me

I love taking on projects with the 914. I won't touch the motor yet, but it it looks like I can do a project with out destroying the car or loosing a limb, I'll do it.

But, I hate that even the really simple jobs take SO long to complete. My sickness lies in that I can't leave things well enough alone and must go the extra step. Just look at the wheel project I undertook last week. I could have stayed with 205s, but went 225s anyway. Now, all I intended to do was to replace my standard K&N conversion with watershields, a 30 minute job at the most. But the sickness got the better of me. And to make things worse... NO ONE WILL EVER SEE THESE!!!

Before:

After:

And this is just supposed to be a driver/ track junkie car.

David -

You've made the first step to recovery by admitting that you have a problem. I can help you, but it may take a while.

Now, don't try to go "cold turkey". You need to slowly wean yourself. The next thing I want you to do is to look at my engine bay...

You are sick!

My 5-lug conversion project has been going on for weeks because I want to do it right. I kind of now wished I had just slapped on that '86 front end but noooo. I'm doing new ball joints (what a *****!), new A-arm bushings, scraping all the undercoating off the A-arms, repainting everything a nice black, etc. It's taking ******* forever and I haven't even gotten around to repainting the wheels.

We all have twitches and ticks (or is it just me?).

The stacks look great now, but have you wondered why the center stack was not as tarnished as its neighbors? Is this normal? If not, what caused this? Could it be related to an imbalance in mixtures or breathing or the eddies established in the wake of the targa-hoop?

Milt, you are not helping my case... Now where did I put that can of red hi-temp paint?

Gilbert, if you look closely, you'll see that the end two have some black soot while the middle has some thick white crud (like my technical terms?). I hope that with this recent complete tune up, all is corrected. At least with them clean, I'll be able to tell what's happening.

Next full project: Interior restoration (temporary until I have cash for a cage)

Don't worry your not alone. I did the same thing on my 6. I bought the K&N watershields from PMO and I thought "those velocity stacks sure are ugly." Well down to the VW store. They had them in pairs for a great price. So I to replaced them and covered them up with the new air filters. But at least I know they look good and thats what matters.

As soon as you hook up the breather hoses, they won't look like that anymore....

no more breather hose... at least not running to my intake anyway. Right now, I just have a small K&N on the breather outlet and even that will be replaces by a filter/ catch tank very soon. I just need to figure out how to convert the hose diameter to an AN size.

David,

Very nice intake system.

With the valve covers, I took mine off and had them powder coated. Then, used a black marker to highlight the PORSCHE.

To really cure yourself of the problem, you must distance yourself from the source. Please send your car to Hickory NC for 10 years until you are cured.

Simple answer to AN is that it is in 16ths.

-3 = 3/16
-4 = 4/16 (1/4)
-5 = 5/16
etc.

That is hose ID.

You were probably talking about the actual adapters to do it, but I figured I would throw that out there anyway.

Thank you for that description. No I wasn't talking adapter, just need the right hose end piece and the right nipple on the overflow bottle. Now, I should be able to get the right one.

Sorry Jim, my car stays in the north. Though a friend of mine in Greenville SC wouldn't mind my powerplant to replace his 1.7.

You can rationalize it away the way I do. I am convinced that the car runs and performs better when every little bit of it is clean.

That is why its regular wash includes all the wheels coming off, detailing the backside of the wheels, touch up paint inside the wheel well, cleaning the headers and exhaust with SS polish, and removing the bumpers to clean any debris behind there.

My family just doesn't quite understand why I had to remove the interior completely just to clean it.

But it DOES run better, right?

You REMOVE the bumpers for a REGULAR cleaning! I hope you don't get it dirty too often!

Not too much dirt behind the bumpers anymore, but I use a non-abrasive polish every 2 weeks or so and I don't like getting it on the rubber bumper top.

Getting it off is easy. Getting it back on by yourself is a PITA. and my wife runs whenever I say "can you just hold that end for a minute?"

JP - there's a fingerprint on that center stack - you better start over and clean the whole motor again!

JP, where'd ya get the air cleaner housing? looks like billet Aluminum, machined. Mucho dinero?

I _cleaned_ mine while I was rebuilding the carbs, as far as I want to go.

I have the "While I'm here I might as well..." sickness, but no where near as bad you you all! Bumper removal for cleaning and waxing? Polished velocity stacks? What are ya? A couple of commie pinko concourse weenies?
