14mm lifter lock nut ?

Trying to get my 914 back on the road. Putting the engine from my 74 project car in my 73.

Setting about to adjust the valves. But going after #1. I find a 14mm lock nut rather than a 13mm. Does this seem peculiar ?

Before I start I thought I’d ask.

Might I have hydraulic lifters ? I read the other posts. I have what looks like big fat alloy push rods.

cary,

No your not crazy. I think even one of the books says their 13mm, but both my cars have 14mm hexes on standard lifters.

What is peculiar is that their lock-nuts. I don't recall them being lock nuts the countless times I've done valve-adjustments. The nut generally has a slender thickness (approx 5mm?).
You can check the PP parts catalog and see what they have listed.

Someone may have used locknuts instead to prevent them from backing off, but I'm not aware that this is a real concern.

It depends on what you mean by big & fat? You shold be able to pull off one push-rod tube and with a magnet, pull out one of the lifters. that way you'll know for sure.

Enjoy!

I guess I didn't mean lock nuts. Just the slim thin ones.

Went thru them once before dinner. I'll go thru them again tomorrow. A couple a little loose. A couple a little tight.

Thanks ..........

At some point in the 73 model year, they changed from M8 valve adjusting lugs to M10 ones. The jam nuts went from regular (thin) M8 nuts using a 13mm wrench size, to special M10 nuts that used a 14mm wrench size.

In other words, it's normal.

The M10 ones were an improvement as they supposedly make it easier to set the adjustment and offer more wear area so the adjustment should hold longer. The M8 one are in demand by people converting over to 911 adjusters. (Note: Some machining required! Checking and setting the whole valve train geometry is also recommended--which is a pain!)
