Exact weight of stock 914 seats?

I did a search, anyone know the weight of a stock 914 seat?

T.I.A.,

Matt

With the seat sliders and tilt ? pretty heavy 40 pounds at least. Just the fiberglass shell with foam and vinyl. less than 20.

That is surprising Joe, they look like they would be very lite.

I always liked that seat design (and the 914, i recently bought a nice one with weird aftermarket seats), to my eyes the o.e. seats are an evolution of the Speedster seat.

I didn't know that they could tilt. That would be beneficial.

But 40 lbs per seat is way too heavy. Manual 928 seats weigh 35 lbs!

If anyone can weigh a seat for an exact measurement please do.

I am building this car to be lite and fast and every lb. must be known in advance.

I'll look locally for a set.

thanks
Matt

Hmm, I have a seat in my garage and will try to remember to weight it.

Personally I would go with a Sparco fiberglass shell seat . Much more substantial lighter and modern with more support. That is what I am doing with my E36 M3.

928 seats are made by Recaro. I would have guessed heavier than 25 pounds

If I remember correctly there is a tech article on the site here I wrote MANY years ago for installing an aluminum race seat in my 914 when building it into a full blown race car. For safety and cool looks, nothing beats the look of a real race seat.

The driver's side power adjust seat was 50 lbs and the passenger side manual
adjust 35 lbs. I weighed what i removed from my 928 '83 S. i was surprised that the power seat added so much weight.

Recaro is Porsche btw as we all know..

The stock seats are pretty darned light. They're fiberglass, some padding, and vinyl covering. I don't know the exact weight, but it sure ain't much. You won't get much (if any!) lighter than that in any seat with padding, IMHO.

I weighed them once and I seem to remember 8lbs for just the seat and 13 for everything but it's been a long time. I do know that when I more a set of old core seats around in my garage, I'm always amazed how light they are. The only way they would weigh 40 is with a small child sitting on them.

I weighed my manual early (1978) 930 seats last night. : 33 lbs heavy.

These are as lite as 911 seats come.

Did all 914 seats tilt as well as slide?

Thanks for all the input but w/o a measurement it's guesswork.

The seat rails tilted, so you could lean the whole seat back a little bit.

There are a couple things to consider besides the weight. If you have the seats out you should be able to see what I am talking about. First is the center tunnel which generally cannot be modified in any way unless additional re-enforcement is added and that means weight added. This and the left and right side box sections are what limits the width of the seat(s) and on the drivers side there is the e-brake handle that has to stay.

Next is the cross body box and this prevents the front of the seat from dropping down flat to the body and again cannot be removed.

Next are the two seat rail pivots for each seat and they will have to be cut out if any other seat mount system is to be used such as with a carbon fiber side mount system.

Last of all are mounts for the seat belt and there are the blind nuts that are in the center tunnel but generally if a race type of seat is used then 5 or 6 point harnesses are used but may not be legal for street use in your area? I would advise checking to see if they are legal.

16 for the seat
4 for the metal rails
probably 7.5 for the metal base
