Luggage Rack Placement

I don't wish to start any electronic fistfights..........so let's just accept that I LIKE the luggage racks and intend to put one on my car. My life, property, and reputation has been threatened because of this.......but baby I just gotta be me.

Question: There are two vertical legs, and two slanted legs on the rack. There is also a higher bar on one side of the top of the rack......presumably for lodging luggage against. WHICH SIDE FACES FRONT AND WHICH SIDE BACK????

Hey Potter, as far as placement I have no idea, but you're not alone in the luggage rack world. My buddy picked up a '74, and whined ceaslessy until I found him one. His looks like a universal mount, and it doesn't matter which way you install it.
He likes mopeds and scooters too, grooooan....................
Hey it's your car, do whatever floats yer boat

i have the luggage rack on my car installed by po or dealer, not sure. the high bar goes to the rear so if you forget to tie down your luggage you won`t lose it until the first hard corner. i have used it and kind of like the look but if i was to repaint i would probably remove it and weld up the holes. the only downside on mine is the rear bolts rub against the top when its stored and it now has two wear spots on the top. maybe mine is mounted too far foward, center of two front holes is aprox 1" from front edge of trunk. i think the exact location is up to you. jc

If someone gives you a hard time, just tell them the rack is for transporting your RACE tires to the TRACK!

Yea, I was thinking tall bar back.......but I have seen photo's with them both ways.....I like your way JC.

Hey Scooter............I have two mopeds too!

I figure it all evens out in the end because I have 6 foot Western plow on my truck.

I wish my car hadn't come with the rack but I don't mind it so much.

Well, as a friend of mine pointed out, it helps the unwashed tell the front from the back....

I have a "new" rear trunk lid or 2 from the swap meet and I plan to have one painted when I have the car painted and have my rack installed on the spare lid. This way, if/when I need the rack, I have it. But most of the time I can run around without it. I like the look both ways.

Rob914...........I cannot help but notice that your name is Rob, and his name is Steal............how odd.

Sorry, I don't know the guy. In fact, the only other 914 I have seen in Dayton was several years ago.......and I think it was green. I could be wrong.

Have you had good luck with your car? I sure do hope so.

I want to take my teener for a cross country ( MN to CA) this summer. I'll NEED a luggage rack. No way do I want to drill for this. Is there a strap-on luggage rack that won't screw up your paint on the decklid?

I've never seen one. I'd get an extra targa top and then bolt some kind of Thule or Yakima carrier to it.

LMAO James!

Today, the same friend that got burned by coffee in a previous thread told me I should drive my car on the golf cart trail off the right side of the road, this is a guy who makes a joke about 914s every day of his life.

You should see him screaming for me to "GET BACK ON THE BIG CAR ROAD!!!"

It did fit nicely, and no SUVs to dodge, 50 has to be some kind of track record. ;-)

M

PS: Tony, stop TAUNTING me with that car, Dave... he's taunting me.
