Cranks but won't start
1970 fuel inj. Has a aftermarket ign switch from PO. Car has started and run fine for the last year.. I install an aftermarket horn that is not related to the ignition circuit at all. Took pos batt cable off and then back on after horn install. Eng cranks but will not start, also no gen or oil warning lights in cluster now. I pulled the switch out and it seems to have continuity from ignition to all terminals. Not getting 12vdc to the coil.
Haynes says check ignition switch, alternator, then regulator. Does that sound right? |

Check the ignition switch, the (+) connections at the battery, and the fuses. Not sure about the alternator and regulator. I know if the regulator is unplugged you will never get an alternator warning light, but having both it and the oil light off is probably something else. Or something else plus the regulator.

I have put a meter on all the ign sw terminals and they seem to be putting out 12.5 volts during cranking. Also during cranking I am getting no volts at the coil. Could I have a open condenser or bad points causing this.
I have all diesel vehicles except this 914 and its been awhile since I worked an old school ignition system. So the circuit runs from the ignition terminal to the distributor first then the coil right. A basic wire schematic would help a lot. |

The GEN & OIL WARNING lights are not on with the key in the ACC position. The gas gauge is not working so that sounds like power to the cluster. It was a little miss leading with those lights out and the Haynes manual faulting the switch, the alternator, then the regulator, in that order.
But I think I have an open somewhere in the start circuit. |

could a faulty BALLAST RESISTOR cause a no volt at coil?
