another vacuum hose question

I have a 74 with a 70 1.7 engine. The PO replaced the FI with carbs and I dont see any vacuum lines. The only line I see is the one from the expansion tank that goes thru the tunnel to the engine bay and stops. This line looks like the line from a set of air shocks. is it OK to vent like this or should I get a charcoal canister.

There would have been a line from the fan shroud (there should be a fitting there somewhere, or on the engine tin) to the line up to the cannister. Then another line from the cannister to the air filter. Both of those lines run along the driver's side rocker panel.

The charcoal cannister is to keep fuel vapor from getting out into the air. The carbs generally spit out a fair amount of that, so I'm guessing that's not of any real import to you. So leave it unplugged.

I have heard a couple of reports of fuel smells in the car when the charcoal cannister system is disconnected. If you're having that problem, you might consider getting and hooking up the cannister--after replacing all the fuel lines, of course.
