'73 Engine Mounts

I'm trying to help a friend with his '73 1.7L 914. While installing a new fuel filter, I noticed the engine bar mounts where they attach to the chassis. It seams that there should be a rubber isolator in place here, but it's missing.

What, if anything belongs here?


On my old quick six mount, I had a rubber piece looking much like a hockey puck that the mount and bolt attached to. I assumed this car would have had a similar piece.

The rubber "hockey-puck" is the early style mount. In 73 (I think) they moved the rubber to the center to help vibration isolation. So those mounts are correct. Check in the center where the bar attaches to the engine to see the mounts.

Motor mounts

The previous reply is correct. Up through the 1972 model year, the 4 cylinder 914 had the rubber mounts on the chassis, with the crossmember solidly bolted to the engine. From 1973 forward, the cross member solidly bolted to the chassis and the rubber mounts went between it and the engine. Also, the later cross member was for the side-shifter tranny and is different from the cross member for the earlier rear shifter.

Great!

At least the car doesn't need any other parts. I am having a hard enough time learning on my own 2.0L /6, now I am adding info about the later /4s and am getting more confused.

The early engine mounts are identical to the tranny mounts, the late engine mounts, 73 & up, are the "hockey pucks".

Also, just for giggles--

There are some very early 73s that have tailshift transmissions with early motor mounts. Allan Caldwell, who used to be PCA's 914 Tech Committee member before Jon Lowe, has a 73 2.0 with a tailshifter that he bought new in 1972 (when the 73s first came out).

To clarify, all 914 tranny mounts are identical. The early 914 engine mounts are idental (Part No.) to the tranny mounts. Sometime in 73, whenever, the engine mounts became the hockey puck types mounted at the engine case.

I kinda wanted to tighten up the shifting on a 74 I once had, so I installed solid aluminum engine mounts (to replace the rubber pucks) and cut off one and and eighth inches, I think, from the upright ends of the engine mount bars to facilitate intallation of tranny mounts. Along with "solid " tranny mounts and newly bushed shift linkage, this car was tight as a drum. Of course,
after a few hours of driving, my limbs became numb from the vibration.
