Cigar lighter pops the fuse

Can the 2 wires for the lighter be reversed so that the fuse of the product I'm pluging into it will blow? I tried my portable CD again after checking the connection but the fuse of the player keeps blowing. The lighter gets warm but never hot. The lighter looks new and the socket looks original. Has anyone else had this happen?

Is it blowing the fuse under the dash as well?

I had a similar problem, you'll need a new socket or take your's apart and see where it is shorting out.

Short to ground??

I don't think that your lighter outlet wires could/would be reversed. Otherwise the 'hot' wire would be connected to ground all of the time. I would think that there is only one wire (12V) that would be going to the lighter, ground would be connected through the lighter housing to the dash/body ground. Just curious, what amp fuse are you using? (Your CD can't be using that much amps) Maybe you can check to see what else is on that circuit. Or maybe a PO added something to the lighter circuit?? I can check factory manuals to see what is supposed to be on that circuit, or you can see what's listed in you owner's manual (should be listed @fuses).

Thanks for the info but it's not the fuse of the lighter that blows. It's the fuse of the portable CD player that keeps blowing... instantly. It works in the Subaru and the truck but not the 914. The lighter gets warm but never hot. I'm thinking it's the socket or there's something in the socket that's run amock!
