Looking for Collector Car Insurance
Looking for a good company do get collector car insurance for my 914. I want to get "stated value" type so if there is a problem I don't just get "Blue Book" value.
Thanks Geoff

what about school and work
My question has to do with restrictions on collector car insurance. I don't drive the cars that many miles, but when I do, I don't want to be told that I can't drive the car to work or the store. (Yes, some say you can't drive to the store!!)
Does anyone have a suggestion for a company that has reasonable prices with just a mileage restriction? Thanks, Dan |

ins.
Try Condon and Skelly. declared value, two levels of ins. I have first , limit 1500 miles a year. $180.00. Next yr. I will take 2nd level, because of increase in mileage, i can't remember how much. 1-800-257-9496 Give them all a shot at your busness. Nothing like a little competition!

There's an insurance thread on the 911 board right now:
Insurance recommendations I signed up with Hagerty. $86 a year for $300K liability coverage seems like a deal to me. The only weird thing I've noticed is that when they mailed me the policy there was something there about not providing uninsured motorists insurance or something. I've got to go back and read the details on that. Does any one know? |

FWIW, I had an agreed value policy with State Farm. Not sure whether it mattered but I'd been with them for about 25 years, and had no problems getting the policy (it was on my '73 911). We had full coverage, including 7500 miles a year, towing, uninsured motorist, a $500 deductible, etc. The value was placed at $10k, and we paid about $500/year. I doubt it was the least expensive place I could have found it, but at least it was available. HTH.

500 a year sure beats 1100. And I have a perfect record, (on paper). I'll give my state farm buddy a call.
I'm with AAA right now. It's not a pleasure to insure 1 new car, 3 Porsches, and 1 16year old driver... Still, Collector car insurance with no restrictions would be the best. But, who has it?? Thanks, Dan |

Note that some "stated value" policies give the insurance company the option of paying the stated value or the "fair market value" (i.e., what they would'a paid anyway). Ya gotta read carefully...
If I recall correctly, five or ten years ago most "stated value" policies were that way. The ones where the insurance company had to cover up to whatever the specific appraised amount was were called "agreed value". (Or I could have that backwards.) Again, read the policy very very carefully!! --DD

A couple of additional thoughts...
The premium we paid was based on the fact that there is only my wife and I, and we are both, uhh, half-centurions. I mean I am, and she's 39 and holding. Dave makes a good point about reading the policy. I did, and then asked our agent - who we had been with since 1977 - "This means that if the car is totaled you guys will pay me $10k right?" He said, "Yes." So off we went. We insured a teen-age daughter once and I still think that was worse than the college degree we paid for. 3 P-cars and a 16 year old? You're a braver man than I, Gunga Din!

There's no free lunch on collector car insurance. There are no plans without restrictions. It seems pretty obvious why they can offer low rates on garaged collector cars. I'm never going to park my car on the street over night in San Francisco. I don't even like to park it on the street during the day at my girlfriend's place in Berkeley. Chances are slim that my car is ever going to get stolen or trashed in a parking lot.

Someone on the 911 board mentioned Leyland. This part of their restrictions give me pause:
"Parking: The auto must ordinarily be parked overnight in a completely enclosed, locked garage accessible only to you or members of your immediate household. Should you change the covered auto's regular garage, coverage at the new garage is only afforded after it has been submitted for review and express written approval has been given for its use. Should the covered auto be left at another location for sale or at any public parking lot or garage, no coverage is afforded. This also applies to cars that are being restorated or customizated. " It sounds like they could deny coverage if the car is parked anywhere other than in your garage. |

Yes, but for full coverage for a 1974 -914 for $173 / year! Try and get liability for that. Anyway my 914,s usually come home at night except when I let them stay overnight at the track.
There are a few of us PCA members that use them but I dont know anybody that has made a claim. Doug |

I got a online quote from Haggerty for $93 per year and stated value of $7000 on my 76 2.0l. I do not know the restrictions yet for that coverage but it sounds good to me.
Right my insurance is thru 21 Century for just under $400 per year but that includes my 21 year old son to also drive the car. Geoff

Hagerty insurance has worked out Great for me.
you set the value of the car. (they will cover only Running classic or antique cars.) I have two cars with them. a Jaguar that cost $288.00 per year for full coverage. and a 1974 914 that I have a full coverage value set at $6500.00 and that costs me $39.00 per year. It dosen't get much better then that. Doug |
