Crush washer

I have an oil sump gasket kit: two gaskets and one crush washer. When I removed the plate to change the screen, there wasn't a crush washer anywhere.

Is the new crush washer meant for between the retaining nut and the outside of the plate? I'm not sure if it goes there or if it is for the pickup tube somehow.

That's an easy one for somebody, I'm sure! BTW, this is the stock setup; not the tuna can.

Thanks!

Thanks, Ron!

Once again you have come through for me! I'm glad I asked....I was completely off base!

By the way, I got her started finally. Thanks for the help. New fuel and vacuum lines all around, figuring out the injector problems, and finally getting ALL the old fuel and varnish out of the sytem has got it going.

With tires and some brake work (and all the misc. stuff I need to do to satisfy the state for an inspection sticker), I'll be on the road. Yeeehaaw!

You da man!

Let us Left Cosaters know what you're short of - we might just have it.

Always glad to help if I can.

word of caution, incase you're unaware. do not over tighten the drain plug nut. use your torque wrench. i think the # is 16 ft.lbs. guessing and overtighthtening can cause major internal damage and an oil leak on the side of the case. if my number is wrong somebody please chime in.

I don't know Kevin, 16 sounds kinda heavy to me since the perimeter case bolts are only 14 ft. lbs.

Edit: Even though the haynes says you are correct, it seems that the crush washer will be more than *crushed.*

the haynes man has 2 #' for 2 dif items, oil drain plug 16, retaining nut for oil screen cover 9.4 (haynes speak). i did a search both here and at shoptalk with little success. i was just trying to raise a red flag before the poster got too enthusiastic with the ratchet. now some security warning comes up at stf so i'm hesitant to revisit there. jake raby refers to this as the "syndrome", the steel bolt breaks the alum. portion inside the case. redering the case useless unless you break it down and reweld the busted item. i'll look in an old vw trends regarding this and see if i can confirm the correct number.

Kevin, thanks for the warning. I had read that in the archives, but it sounds so serious that it can't be mentioned enough.

Funny thing, now, is that the drain plug and the sump plate and retainer don't leak....but the filter does! Is there a torque spec for the filter?

The 16 lb-ft is for the drain plug.

The 9.4 lb-ft is for the sump nut. (Yeah, it's a nut--it has threads on the inside--it just looks like a bolt. Kinda.)

Overtightening the drain plug is very survivable. Overtightening the sump retaning nut very often means a complete teardown of the motor...

Torque spec for the oil filter is:
Spin until the gaket just touches, then 3/4 turn more. That's the torque spec for pretty much all oil filters.

Check for a piece of gasket stuck to the filter flange; that's one of the more common causes of oil filter leaks.

Thanks, Dave! I probably didn't make a full 3/4 turn. I'll back it off and re-tighten it.
