Hey Brad how did you go about getting into what you are doing right now. Building and restoting racecars and performance oriented cars in general has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I just got caught up in the family buisness which delayed it for a while. Do you know of a good welding school in the Sacremento area. I am moving to Sacremento in two weeks. I can't wait. I love California. Whatever advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Many community colleges offer trade classes. Sacramento is a very cosmopolitan place being the state capitol and the home of a few universities. You will find what you need in Sac, no doubt.

Great pics Brad. I'm going to begin converting my 'rust bucket' into a track car, these pics will give me a great chance to copy the master. I've contacted URY914 and he has some great ideas that I'm going try to incorporate also. Thanks for all of the postings for us newbies.

What's up with the right side of the firewall being cut out?
Or is that an optical conclusion........

******* awsome! I have a few questions regarding building a race car. What are the important parts for a racer? Engine/tranny, suspention and breaks? So, do you just gut everyting else out, like in your pics? There is no carpet, passenger seat, etc...to save weight, right? The reason I ask, is because a few blocks away from me, there are three 914 rollers in this guys yard. I have the fantasy of getting one and making a race car someday.

"Optical conclusion". (Heh, I like that phrase.)

It's a hole in the middle of the firewall, not the edge. It was to be able to mess with the fan and alternator belt on the six-cylinder motor that used to be in there, I'm pretty sure. Or was it "going to be there"? I forget if he actually did run it with a Six or not...

There actually were holes in the firewall at both ends. They were to pass the suspension bracing through, and they were closed up again afterwards.

Hey Brad,

Isn't that the same car as in the pics below?

Used to be from a guy named Paul (cant remember his last name - his e-mail was harleyman@...)

I followed his project on that group5 car through rennlist and his website, as he was rebuilding the car and putting in a 3.2 flatsix

I thought he did a nice job (could only judge from the pics of his website) and had quite a few cool goodies on that car.

On completion, he raced the car only a couple of times and than overrevved the engine and then lost interest in it

That was about a year ago (maybe longer, dunno)

So, is it the same car???

Cheers,

Jeroen

Dan,

Here is the secret:

Find a local guy and work for free until you can do it on your own.

It ALWAYS comes down to money. If you have the money and time to hang out and work for free.. the learning curve is cut in half. I used to drive 4 hours one way to work with a fab guy for free many years ago. I didnt know jack about suspension/setup/fab/welding/jigs/fixtures. If I hadnt been living with my girlfriend and sharing a house with her (now my wife) I would have lived in his shop and did nothing but learn. Its a passion that comes from deep inside. You either have it or you dont. You either sacrifice or sit back and watch. This stuff is not taught in any school. Your learn from watching and doing small tasks until they become big tasks.

I have taught 4 people over the last 6 months how to use our Miller Mig welder. I taught them in less than 20 minutes. It's all practice after that. I give them small jobs and they dont get paid... they learn.

Sound like fun ??

My current fabricator is self taught. Tony rocks.

Wasn't meant to badmouth the PO

Don't think he build the cage.
IIRC he only added the rear braces through the firewall

I just saw a lot of the same typical details on the car
(the paint sceme, the big square tube rear xmember, strange layout of the mainhoop of the cage)
So I was just wondering if it actually was the same car.

It looked a lot cleaner back then though 8^)

Are you gonna run it with the Group 5 bodywork?

Cheers,

Jeroen

PS I've got a lot of the website that showed the project saved on my drive. Lemme now if you want it...

Actually the Groupe5 body work sold to the guy who has the ALIEN9148. The 928 powered 914.

We have my buddy Roger Sheridans narrow body kit for it for this version of the car.

The car was dirty from all the welding and grinding. Its now being a made a roller with crappy suspension so it can be media blasted.

Rob,

if your serious about building a car.. I'll let you in on a little secret... dont use a rusty tub for a race car. You will HATE yourself later. Just like I preach to people building conversion cars... buy the best possible car you can afford to start ANY project.

PC (Paul Christofersen) moved to Sacramento, I believe....... I have his addy here, someplace....so be nice.

He scrambled the valbes in the 3.2L and had 10 lbs of compression in one hole......zip in the other 5.....had *some* family problems, his job went to hell..... and he said "the hell with this" and moved to the land of fruits and nuts.

A gud fella and a real 914 loony. He'll be back (914 wise), I think.

He sent me his contact info.. I know he will be back into 914's.

His old 3.2 is now a fire breathing 310hp monster.
