74 914-4 to six
HI guys, got a buddie with a 74 2.0 4cyl 914. he decided he needs a six. Hes asked me for two things, swap info and leads on a 2.7.
I think he know he'll have to stiffen the chassis and weld n the new engine mount. Are there other parts that must be installed, ie oil tank mounts etc? And if any of you have a runnign 2.7 you want to sell, I can put you intouch with him. Also I guess I can put you in touch with him if your interested in his 2.0-4. Thanks

Just have to play my same old tune... kinda like Dave and his 009 testing procedure. (What was it again, for the millionth time?
![]() You can get a brand new/blueprinted 2270 4 cylinder with around 160 hp (give or take 10) that will knock your socks off for just the price of a six cylinder engine rebuild. I'm sure sixes are great when you have the money to put in a 3.0 or above. But since most people don't, the big-bore four cylinder has incredibly high bang for your buck and it doesn't take any special modifications. Check out http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/ I will probably never have a six in my car. It just doesn't make sense to me. Last edited by jackmech; 10-24-2002 at 08:37 AM.. |

jackmech,
One reason for a 6 cyl even if is only 2.0 to 2.7 liters... The sweat sound of HP music in Flat 6 ![]() You are correct, a T-IV motor can generate a bunch of HP cheaper than an equivalent 6-cyl motor conversion Also a 2.7 conversion with cooler will run around $2-4K in qlty parts, of course motor and labor are exta.

All other things being equal, a stock-ish six will usually stand up better to serious track use than a stock-ish four. Some guys disagree with this, and have raced the fours very successfully, but we're typically talking big-money hand-crafted race engines there. The 911 engine is built to rev and will happily run at >100mph all day long. The type4 (to me) sounds like it's about to explode every time you run it past 5K rpms.
I do agree that somewhere up to the 140-160hp mark, going to a six is highly debatable (a "luxury") , definitely not the cost-effective route. But show me how you can get 250-350hp out of a semi reliable Type4 and I'll eat a tire.

And a lot of Fours don't like to run at 4500-5200 RPM for a long time at WOT. Mine was not real thrilled withcruising at 4000 RPM for two solid hours, nor was it pleased with 20 minutes of 4500-5200 at WOT.
Other ones will do better than mine, but it's a rare Six indeed that won't run at redline all day long. --DD
