Shifter and Linkage working fine - but tranny doesn't engage
Hi all - '75 2.0. Working on adjusting the trans linkage yesterday I now have a good throw for R,1st, 2nd, 3rd but still need some adjustment to get 4th, 5th.
Here is the problem: I can move the shift lever and see the linkage and the pivot at the trans moving into the various gears - but when I turn the rear wheel (or half shaft) with the clutch engaged there is no resistance. How can I see if the tranny gears are engaging? I adjusted the clutch to be all the way engaged (just to check) but that didn't change anything. This tranny was working fine when I started this rebuild project some years ago - it did sit for quite a while..but I filled it with oil while it was in storage. And there is a brand new clutch and assocated bits. TIA! |

BTDT... and drop the engine for nothing except practice
![]() ![]() ![]() Normal if you got both wheel off the floor. Have some one hold the tire on the other side and you will know that it is engaged.

Thanks JJ - seems that the axles turn independently of the trans. I put the car in gear (rear wheels are off the ground) and used the starter - sure enough the wheels turned. Now all is good and I got the shift linkage adjusted.
