Oil temp sender in a tuna can

About a month ago there was a long post about how there is a taco plate that will take a VDO temp sender. Brad posted a picture, but the taco plates with the hole for the sender are hard to find. So what about taping the oil sump (tuna can) and installing the sender in the side of the can? Has anyone done it? You may have to add a flat piece to the can so the sender will fit flat against it and seal properly.

Whata think???

Hum.

I have never checked the thread pitch of the sending unit, but I'm betting you could drill a hole in your current sump plate and weld the proper nut to it. Use a copper crush gasket and move on.

Anybody know what nut he needs to do this ??

Welding a base for the sending unit to the tuner can is more work than drilling a hole and welding a nut to the sump plate.

I have one I can send you in the mail for 25$

I'll be the first to try it. Send me the sending unit and I'll find a nut to fit.
Thanks Brad

I'll email you with my address and we'll work out the payment details.

I'll need to know which gauge you have (I actually meant I would send you a 2.0 temp sending PLATE for 25.$..lol)

then you dont have to do anything but match the sending unit to the gauge you have.

Normally I run a 300deg gauge and a sending unit to match.

I just recieved my temp sender for my sump plate. I looked all over for the thread pitch which I wrote down, because I talked to the tech at VDO before having the sender sent from Pelican. There is only one metric threaded sender and I think it's 12mmX1.0. If you are going to tap something or weld a nut on, use SAE or NPT. The senders are cheaper when they're not metric.

Interesting observation Milt.

Thanks for tip. I just go on auto pilot when ordering (pulling from the shelf) the sending units. I'm betting a Autometer guage and sending unit is HALF priced compared to a VDO.

I'm currently running a VDO dip stick sending unit, which I understand is not the best. That's why I was thinking of sticking the sending in the sump's tuna can instead of a new taco plate. I have a 300 degree gauge.
