Six engine mount dynamics
Background:
Way back when I had a '73 914. I did not like the way the front mounts for the engine tore themselves up and allowed a lot of engine rotation when they were good. I ended up installing a crossbar from a tailshift car (lighter) which gave we a much wider base and better rubber mounts. I modified the shift rod to fit. Currently: I just got a 911 engine, so my car is definitely going to be a six. The original firewall mount seems like crap, is the aftermarket one much better? It just does not seem like a very wide footprint to transfer the engine torque to the chassis. I could easily fabricate a crossbar type mount that is not as heavy as the one that is available (I've heard) but is it worth it? Do you guys notice excessive engine motion with the firewall mount? And what are the exhaust clearance issues with a six and a crossbar type mount. I don't care about the shift rod - I know I can make that work. Thanks. |

Buy RJ's mount.
The street rod guy's have been holding their SBC's in the chassis the same way (front mounts about 12 inches apart) for years and years. LOL.. You would like to think that your flat 6 has 300lb ft of torque. We have 9146's (STOCK 6 engine mount...1 BOLT) with 325hp 3.6 liter engines in them that get AutoX'd and raced every other weekend. You will be fine with the RJ mount. The corss bar looks great on paper, but will present several problems as you get it into the car. B |

Well, I knew it wouldn't break, but I was wondering if they ove around more than one might like. I know the '73 2.0 I had didn't produce much torque, but it was enough to make those stock rubber bushings move more than I liked.
If the cross bar is that much of a pain, then I will just go with Rich's. Can't hurt to ask! Hey B, Are you going to start making some decent stainless heat exchangers for 6s anytime soon? |

Um.. officially NO.
Not any time soon. Will we make them in the future ??.......... yes. RJ sells his mounts with the SC sport mounts. They dont move. Your 4cyl probably had broken mounts..LOL B |

The RJ mount has been working very well in my car. Really like the fact that some of the motor's weight has been transfered fwd as compared to a 914-4 motor mounting points.

That's a good point Jim.
The weight is now directly at the bottom of the firewall instead of being back another 8-10 inches on a cross bar. I cut the stock 4 mounts out of the car (more room) when doing a six conversion. Factory 6's dont have the side pod mounts that a 4cyl car has. They left them of the chassis completely. B |
