Stuck defroster

I just purchased a nice 75 914 2.0 and as I drove it home, I felt the cockpit being too hot. It turns out the defroster (only left side, I think) is blowing warm air in. The dash controls show it as being off.
I am not remotely a gearhead, but would like to get this fixed. Any help in regular people language? Thanks

First, make sure the lever with the red knob next to the gear shift lever is all the way down.

If the heat it still on, get under the engine bay and look for where the heater tubes (corrugated paper or maybe plastic) attach to the body at the lower front corners of the engine bay. Follow them back to the "flapper valves", which have levers sticking out of the top or the bottom. There should be a pull cable attached to each flapper valve's lever. Push the lever away from the direction that the cable would pull it.

If you still have heat, then the flap inside the valve has failed. Replace the valve or take it apart and fix the flap. In some cases, the fix is as simple as bolting together two parts of the flap which used to be riveted together until the rivet failed.
