914 2.0 Taco Plate - Billet Aluminium
I want to replace my taco plate, with a solid cover using gaskets and sealant. I don't use an oil temp gauge so no need for the sensor hole...
Are there any vendors that sell a solid cover? |

mine is forever leaking. What is the secret to making this leak free, with the original plate?
Thanks, Joe |

On both the big fours I raced, the taco plate was alloy but the case had been converted to use 6 small studs that ran around the outer edge such as a type 1 engine. The studs threaded through from inside the case and had a built in seal. This was the only way we ever got a good seal as the inherent design on the cover, filter, gaskets and such will probably never seal completely.
This was done when the engine was on the bench and care was taken to not let any metal get into the internals. It could be done with the engine in the car if on a lift or jacked up high enough if a person had very study hands. The alloy cover we used was dished similar to a stock stamped steel one to give a slight "sump" effect and did not use the screen like a stock but s special oil pick up. It was made by Auto-Craft and I think they are still around? We did NOT use any sealer since there are times when the main case area is under a vacuum and sealer can and probably will be sucked into the oil system..........bad! |

John, you're talking about the sump plate in the middle. The "taco plate" is the one in the left-front corner, under the dipstick. It has two bolts that hold it on, and the myth is that if you overtighten them the plate will fold into a taco shape.
The stock plate that has the temp sender in it has an o-ring around it, plus a paper gasket between the plate and the cover plate, and crush washers on the two through-bolts that hold it in. I don't know what you'd do there for a better seal. A new O-ring, maybe smooth the surface it rides on in the case, maybe use one of the specific O-ring lubes on it? --DD

Oh yeah, it has only been 9 1/2 years since I worked on that engine. I guess my memory is slipping away? I did look at the pictures of the underside of the 2.8L engine and it showed the same shape cover as I had on the sump so maybe it had been changed too?
