Which Cam??????

O.K. is there a easy way ( without dropping the engine) to find out what cam is in my 914. I have a 73 1.7 with a carb. It runs like SH-- !
I think it may have been Fuel Injected when new and P.O. converted it. I am going to purchase parts to change it back to F.I. If I have a F.I. compatable cam. If not I'LL try Webers. Any help will be apprecisted. Thanks in advance Dave

Unless you have strong evidence that the cases have been split, go with the therory that the cam is stock. FI will work nicely. If you do put a dial indicator on the valve stem and manage to read the lift and duration with some kind of degree wheel on the fan with a mirror............well, you get the point. And then, you'd have to hunt down the cam with the specs to get the whole story rather than looking at cams and choosing specs. Reverse engineering at it's finest.

But wait, there's more: Is the set up you have now tuned up? Correct jets and timing? IF it runs poorly now, Webers won't help much until all is optimum. BTW, most agree that the center carb is junk, so I guess any thing you do is an improvement of sorts.

whats your driving style, where do you want the majority of the power?? what CR will you use? induction? ignition??
Every single ond of these, plus tire sizes will make the design much easier and accurate..

Let us know and I'll help, I have used every web cam that they have a master for, except 3....I have their powerbands memorized..

If you remove the oil pump then the part number can be seen stamped on the end of the cam.
