Yes, the lightest street wheels put on a regular-production Porsche by the factory. They're the only ones made out of a magnesium alloy.
They "should" be silver and not black in color. --DD

Well, actually, there were some magnesium phone dials on 944 cup cars, but then these may fall outside "regular production".

Stove burners/Gas burners
Yea, so they're the lightest wheel that Porsche offered on a production car. I used to see them on 911 E's , not sure about T's. Never seen them on any S's.... No one wanted them 20 years ago, because NO ONE wanted a 5 1/2 " wide wheel. I think that Roland had mentioned that they came on some sort of comfort/ride (?) option.
I have a set since they came on my car when sold new. But when I bought my car used, early Fuchs 15x6s were ON the car, the stoveburners were a spare set. My friend used them as ROLLERS when he had his car in the paint shop. ANYONE EVER SEEN THEM USED ON ANY RACE/TRACK/AUTO-X CARS??? (I sure would like to see a picture!) When you can fit a wider 6" or 7" wheel on a 911/914-6, who would want a 5 1/2? I think that Fuchs made a 15x5 1/2 in '68 and there was the Fuchs 14x5 1/2 on the '69 911 and later the 914-6. IMHO, unless they're cheap, save your $. |

I've seen them on autoX 914s before. Very useful in any class that specifies stock wheels only... No pics offhand though.
The original 1967 Fuchs wheels were 4.5x15, I believe. Possibly as wide as 5". In a year or two they went to 5.5" width, and then started getting wider in the 70s... The 5.5x14 wheels were the regular alloy wheels on the 911E, available in the "comfort" package for the other 911s, and were an option on the 914-6 as well. --DD

I think he is a drunk Norwegian..... or that is part of the club to look like that. I don't like the way they paint the gas burners either. Makes them look like those old empi wheels.

Alloys
Dave,
The 67 S Fuchs alloy is 15 x 4 1/2. Geoff, Thanks for the picture! Driver/racer could use a full-face helmet... for our sake, of course.... (takes one to know one). I noticed the stoveburners on 72-3 911 E's... never seemed to notice them on '70-71s... anyone have/had a 2.2 E (or T) with stoveburners? My neighbor was an original owner of a stock '68 912 with 15x 5 1/2s. |

Very cool:
http://www.gasburner.net/ These gas burners are, in my opinion, the rarest of the Porsche production alloys. I almost never see these come up (I know, as I was looking for one quite a while ago)... -Wayne

Closet stove burner
FWIW,
I'm sorry. I wasn't telling the whole truth here... I did more than just lend my stove burners to my friend when he was having his 6 painted. I actually ran my stoveburners with old Semperits (165s) on my '65 Ghia with some wide 5 to 130mm adapters. (I think I paid either $25 or $40 for the adapters, used.) That must have been back in the early to mid-80s. I didn't run the Porsche center caps because I didn't want anyone to know what the wheels were! Ha! There, I said it... I guess the Ghia is that sea mist blue and the stoveburners were/are the original silver. It actually looked ok. I know I have an old picture somewhere.... I took them off so I could run some steel 7s with VW 5-clip centers, VW hubcaps, and 185x70s. |

Set of 4 sold for $1,225.69 on eBay
I decided to revive this old thread instead of starting a new one (plus I always laugh when I see that drunk Norwegian). Anyway, a set of 4 Gasburners sold for $1,225.69 on eBay. That's 306.42 per wheel!
Are these things really that rare and worth that much? Or, is this just another case of eBay lunacy? |

I vote for lunacy...
