73' 914 3.2 Carrera Conversion

Hi all

Just purchased a very nice and "Dry" 3.2 Conversion running the original DME Motronic
FI system

It is running some original 914-6 components .......

My question, the Combo Gauge is out of an Original 6er...and I would like to swap it out for a 911 unit.... ( more comfortable with the 911 Temp & Oil Pressure measurements)

Can I just Plug and Play with a unit from an 84' to 89' 3.2 Carrera ??

The Conversion has a PMS wiring harness..

Thanks in advance for all assistance

It's not quite plug and play, because the wires are not all carrying the same signals. In particular, you have the fuel level signal and the fuel warning light signal, which are very different from the oil pressure signal.

To use the 911 oil pressure gauge, you will have to run a new wire from the sender on the engine up through the firewall to the gauge. Either that, or find an unused wire that you can re-purpose.

The oil temp gauge should work, assuming you're using the gauge module and sender that match. (The easiest on that is to get them from the exact same car.) The oil temp wiring is in place on a 914-6, and also on the 73+ 914s, because they could have had the center console with gauges.

You might want a fuel gauge, though, because running out of gas is annoying. There are gauges you can get that work with our senders (I think the ones for old VW Bugs, for instance) that you can mount wherever you think appropriate. And you can add a warning light to the dash panel somewhere (in between the instruments, possibly, but somewhere visible!) that you can run with the "low fuel" light signal. Or put the light in or next to the fuel gauge.

There are also "triple gauge" kits you can get, or you can get complete triple gauges from places like North Hollywood Speedometer, or Palo Alto Speedo.
