Ebay nightmare
I am so angry with myself and the seller on eBay. The seller had 100% positive feedback with quite a few sales of cars since 2014. I purchased a 1974 914 from Tennessee shipping to South Florida. The listing said specifically that the Bible is in above average condition. The pictures were not very clear and the pictures did not show any of the parts that were severely damaged. The motor is seized up from rain getting in the open carburetor. He had stated that the car was run within the last year as it is previously been in storage. The body damage on the car is pretty extensive the driver side rear quarter is pushed in all the whole length and scratch all down that side deeply dented. The passenger side rear of the car is bubbled up in the taillight is melted as if it were exposed to a fire. I would appreciate any advice on how to pursue this matter. I know what I should have done differently please do not give me advice on what I should've done, thank you.

Check to see if the eBay vehicle protection plan will cover you. I would think you might have a shot at it from the engine perspective since the seller stated:
"I cranked it and backed it out of the garage and that was the last time it ran. Car should run with gas and a new battery. Underneath the car is pretty solid" |

Thank you Bill for your reply. I have contacted eBay, however I don't have a leg to stand on because the vehicle is over 10 years old. I have also Contacted PayPal and they said they cannot do anything either. I have initiated a complaint with consumer and insurance division of consumer affairs in Nashville Tennessee. I have asked the seller to refund me $1000. I will have to scrap the car because I do not have a place to store it. I was hoping to have some paint and minor bodywork along with the usual breaks fuel lines and carb rebuild. This point I am out $2710. 2164 purchase, or 150 for transportation, and $100 for receiving and assessing cars damage from shop.
Is a link to the listing. |

This happens quite a bit with Internet car sales. Are you a member of 914World.com? We, and Pelican have members all over the country who would have surely been able to go put eyes on that car before you sent your money off. I hope you are able to pursue fraud charges against this liar. Good luck and best wishes on this problem.

The biggest lesson I can see from this is there was no in person inspection?! When I sell something on ebay or gun broker or other internet sight I require an in person visit to look at the object being sold and I want the same if I am buying. The exception is when selling a gun or buying a gun I take the gun to my local FFL and then we call the prospective buyer and has asks the FFL technical questions about the item and that settles things. So far I have never had a problem and that is so I can keep my reputation in tact as it is. When I sold my race car, the buyer was in Puerto Rico and did not plan to visit San Diego so we did a telephone work over by the owner of Black Forest Porsche Repair in San Diego and the buyer so he could ask, ask, ask and I even started the car with the phone right behind the open exhaust headers and I thought the buyer would wet his pants from happiness! He is still happy as far as I know so the extra work is worth it I feel.
Sorry for the issues but sometimes learning the hard way is expensive! |

I guess all are rusty...
I am sorry to see that 914 can't be saved.
From the ad description it looked like it was in good condition. Based on my build experience, I guess these cars are going to have rust even if they're kept in the Porsche Museum. The longitudinal construction sheetmetal is not very well protected against corrosion. Sometimes it will look good from the outside, but when you start digging it can get ugly pretty fast. The car I have is from Pennsylvania. My longs were.......long gone!

I would take allot of photos and re list the car for sale on 914 world.
Be honest of the condition and I bet you can sell it for close to your cost. Chalk it up to a hard lesson learned. |

Want to unstick the engine? This old-trick might do it: put some Marvel Mystery Oil into each spark plug hole. I used a 3 to 4 foot length of .25-.5 inch clear hose, sucked some oil into the hose from a Marvel can with my own lungs, vice-gripped the hose, put the oiled end into the spark plug hole, and blew into the hose as forcefully as I could when I released the vice for a spray-the cylinder-wall-effect with my lungs. Let that magical oil soak for a day or two inside there. Leave the plugs out, air up the tires, put the gearbox into 2nd and with you at one end and a friend at the other, take turns gently pushing and rocking the PORSCHE back and forth until it unsticks. More oiling won't hurt either as far as I know. It all burns out the first time the engine runs. Smoky-white when burned but the engine will clean itself of that excess oil in the cylinders within the first 10 to 15 minutes of it running. Obviously, clean properly gapped and correct plugs, fresh gas, and a FULLY charged battery for 1st start-up attempt. Then drain the oil from the engine after its 1st running of several minutes, change the filter and renew the oil. I use either Castrol GTX or Brad-Penn

Sorry you got burned...
The ad doesn't say much of anything. Did you ask for more pictures? To be fair, you paid $2000 for a 914. That's awfully low. I wouldnt expect to buy a good car for anywhere near that. Around the Midwest at least, $6000 buys a pile of junk. $10,000 gets a decent car... Good luck, it may be salvageable... Bo |

Payment
If you used paypal you can place a clam after you sumbit a negative feedback. Paypal will investigate after you posted photos of the defective parts.
If you used your credit card, please contact them and they will reverse the charge due to false data from the ebay seller. Just as lone as you didn't used your bank account to make a wire transaction then you are ok. GOOD LUCK BRO |

Have to go out and look at them. I can look at the eBay pictures and tell you to run. seriously. The seized motor is the least of your problems. That car has serious rust issues. I bet you can part it out for what you bought it for, and go look for a clean tub...

Don't feel to bad, honestly it looks to me like you paid $2000 for a car worth about $2000. Even from the limited pictures its pretty obvious that the car is a pile. If you want a nice running presentable 914 you need to spent more like 10 grand.
Same car same picks relisted by original seller.....????

Part it out and recoup your "investment".
