Stock temp gauge on dash

OK, I guess it's my turn to ask the stupid question of the week. I have a '76 2.0 with the "temp gauge" located along with the idiot lights for alternator and oil pressure, fuel gauge, etc. to the left of the tach. Since there are no markings on the gauge (just a normal operating zone), what exactly does this gauge measure -- cylinder head temp, oil temp, or?

Most replace the stock gauge with a matched gauge with numbers and the sender. It takes the guess work out of it.
