914 speedo angle drive seal replacement
I have a "new to me" '74 914 and am slowly working on all the little things - drips and leaks and such. The speedo drive was clearly leaking so following all your advice I removed and disassembled it. The main o-ring was clearly compromised and the inner seal did not look good. The o-ring is pretty much a no brainier but how do I get the steel ring out that holds the inner seal? I carefully pried and pulled but do not want to go too far and damage it. Can I do this myself? Is there a tool? Thanks.

You evidently need a very strong and stiff pick to get that ring out. Be careful not to scratch the bore it rides in; the material isn't super tough and it doesn't take much of a scratch to start leaking again.
Consider the modified drive shaft with two O-rings on it. I think 914rubber sells them. (If you remove the drive shaft, be very very very very very careful with the little set-screw-bolt that holds it in!) --DD

Thanks DD. I will try again but to be sure, there is what seems to be steel ring holding the seal in place. Am I to remove the ring or pull the seal past it?
I have seen the warnings about the set screw. 3 ft/lb to tighten it, right? Will also look into the soluble seal version ... |

If it's the steel ring I'm thinking of, you pull it out. And it can be tough to pull.

Finally got this settled. I ground down a carriage bolt so it was wafer thin and got the ring and seal out without scratching the aluminum barrel. After hours of working on it the new seal and ring went back on in 5 min. Now if only the car would start!
