I went kayaking yesterday. With the increasing cost of gas, it is cheaper to take my 914 than it is my Explorer. So I carried my kayak on top of my 914
![]() ![]() Anyway, I was wondering what other folks have carried, hauled, etc. in/on their 914s? [This message has been edited by Jim Smolka (edited 05-13-2001).] |

I purchased a Yakama bike rack for my 1987 VW Golf which also fit my wife's Escort. We have since sold both vehicles and purchased a '95 GTI-VR6 and '96 Passat TDI. The Yakama rack doesn't fit either car, but I found out purely bu accident that the rack will fit the roof of the 914. When I bought the Porsche, It came with many spare parts including another roof. Since I hate spending a half hour installing this PITA of a rack, I leave it perminently mounted to the spare roof. I get alot of strang looks carying my mountain bike which is about as big as the car, but I can't wait to see the looks I get when I mount my 18' canoe. We'll see if we can't post a pic in the Gallery.

Hello
Type 4 long block in frontdrunk while dissasembled /6 in the rear two tranys and axle parts in the passenger footweel. Couldn´t resist and the car was not worth detailing just a fun driver. Normaly I used my 412 Variant for part shoping. The Explorer is not a car it is a old trapper hut sold as a car. Grüsse |

My '70 1.7 worked great as a storage compartment for a bunch of garage junk for the past six years. Once, my wife hauled me home in it but I can't remember any details exept for the ration I endured following the fun
![]() Now the trunks have parts in them and the third garage stall is my haven of tins, shroud(mouse droppings),fi,motor, and tranny. There's a blue 914 running around in Melinda Heights RSM but not sure who it is. If your on-site, drop me a line and come see the project. |

Four 16 foot 4x4's -- thank goodness for sunny days, targa tops, good retracting seatbelts (for lashing them in) and police officers with a sense of humor {no ticket

College days, hmmm. Remembering those earlier days back when I was in high school, my youngest brother and his football buddies borrowed a fiberglass Ronald MacDonald from toyland. Anyway, it wound up in my Mom's basement. Eventually, Mom wanted it out of her house. So, I stuffed it into my 914 with its head sticking way above the targa bar. The manager was sure glad to get his Ronald back.

Jim,
You've touched on one of my favorite characteristics of the 914 - it versatile carrying capacity. Although my current 74 - 2.0 has spent more time in pieces on my garage floor than on the streets of Phoenix, my first 914, a 76 - 2.0 was also my truck! Over the years I carried numerous large items in this car: A large gas BBQ grill in trunk. A 5-piece set of patio furniture, some in the trunk, and the lounge chair in the passenger seat. My wife took the targa top in her sedan. A large 27" TV in the trunk. Numerous sheets of 4x4 plywood in trunk. And of couse my wind surfer strapped to the roof. I remember seeing other mid-engined cars like the Toyota MR2, Fiat X19, and Fiero (can I say that word here?). None of them even came close to the efficient & simple design of the 914. And all that from a car that wasn't deemed a pure Porsche! Well, so much for the purists. Their loss is our gain! Gerard |

Hello
Well the 914 is one of the best VW ever built. I´m a 914 nut and row up with that car. I also had the opportunity to srew and drive much other mid engine cars up to damn wired italian made pieces like 288 GTO. The Pontiac Fiero was not to bad compared to other american sportscar´s. However fearing Ralph Nader or the average costumer ( DD ) the suspension got a bit "conservative" and to soft for fast driving. The 2,5?/4 didn´t sound well and generatet lots off vibes sometimes you could see the dash swing and feel the shakes. But the 85 horse had tourqe and the 4 speed was better to shift then the 914 1,7. Later V6 was a bit spotier but would had trouble to keep up with a 914/2,0. This was the best on the MR2 the shifter.... Porsche drivers think the 914 is a Volkswagen as it is to parctical with two trunks. You can divide in His and Hers. the spare can be mount in both trunks. One is heatet to warm up clothes in winter. Real Porsches have small trunks. As you might know a Sportscar f.e. in Le Mans musst have a passenger seat and a trunk. The suitcase is standarzized and musst fit in a "trunk" with musst be a hard enclosure not used for other things like air channeling. After seeing the new 996 TT front trunk I think they reached the 917 trunk volume. No Golf roller bag will fit there, no sportscar anymore. But it has Cupholders ! And you can see the coke can poping out under hard driving. Grüsse |

1. Drivers side rocker panel – after I picked it up off the side of the freeway where it fell off.
2. I also carried a small campfire in the engine compartment once, but who hasn’t done that? |

I brought home a freezer once. When the rear trunk lib is up, you have a mini pick-up truck.

In my first 914 (around 22 years ago) i carried a buddy, and a half barrel of Budweiser, tapped, with a C02 tank to keep it from going flat. All the way up to Big Bear and back.
I was in college, and that was what we did back then. Sure it wasn't politically correct, but it was the 70's after all. In my current 914, the only thing strange that i carry in it is a small block chevy engine :-) ------------------ Gerald Gore II (Sam) 73 914 350 small block 80 911SC |

Hey 3D914 was that 27" TV in the box?
I just picked up one couple weeks back and the guys at the store were laughing at me as I strapped mine in the back trunk. In the box! I asked them to bring it out to the car and they stopped at the Mini van that was 2 cars before mine. I have also put amountain bike in the rear trunk with a set of golf clubs and the targa top with the trunk lid closed all the way. Had to take the pedals and seat and wheels of the bike with one wheel in the front trunk with the seat. But it all fit. ------------------ CWP/VIR 72 914 L20E in rusto. 73 914 L20E 2.0L in resto. a914lover73@hotmail.com |

![]() Surfboard tied from the rollbar to the windshield. Here's the trick: from Montreal to Newport, Rhode Island. If it had started to rain, on the way down or on the way back, we would have had to ditch the board or wait it out under an overpass ! got there and back fine. When the America's Cup was in Newport, there was good partying. Michel |

Michel, don't you know that at anything over 35 MPH the rain all goes over the car and never touches the occupants? Red lights suck, though... BT,DT.
Hmm, a surfboard might change that figure... --DD PS--the "critical speed" for hail is about 55 MPH... ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |
