Looking For A Cheap Type 4 Engine In Orlando Fla

I am wondering if anyone around the Central Florida area had A relatively complete 914-4 engine for sale. I am looking for anything from a rough core to a frozen up junker. I am simply looking for a core to disassemble and reassemble with my 2 sons. I would not even object to giving it back in a few months once we have assembled and disassembled it a few times. I would like a nice father son learning experience. I have no intention of using the engine when completed soI would prefer cheap to buy. I am willing to drive several hours in any direction for the right deal. If it helps I have A LOT of 944 parts to trade if you need anything. Does this perhaps work for anyone out here?

That is Better Than Perfect!

That is more than perfect for what I need, Probably too nice and would cause me to jump back into the 914 world again. I had one as my first car and had an intense love/hate relationship with that car. I am now working with my son on his first 944 and while I like the 944 I do miss the 914. They are fun and amazing cars when they are cooperating and want to be.

I know the love hate side of that equation and Ive owned both cars. A nd played with the 944 with my son who blew the head gasket on my car after destroying a drivers wheel and a differential.... and no I didn't give him the keys his mother did. Just some random thoughts and memories. Now he has 4 sons of his own and he told me the other day that he is up to his ears in bicycles and motorbikes helping his boys and he now understands why I would chastise him for being so hard on equipment. The engine that is in the picture has been dis assembled and is waiting a rebuild but if transportation can be arranged I would put it back together for your budding mechanics education. It will need to be cleaned from the cases out as it was a core engine in a junkyard sitting on the ground when a flooded rive over ran its banks and put the engine under water. The water was full of silt and leave so that material is inside the case. Let me know if anyone you know is heading East for Christmas that could move it from Austin TX And good luck with your sons.

It may be easier to find a type 1 engine than a type 4 and they are pretty close to the same in construction. I would make it a real overhaul and get it to run on the bench and then sell it and let the kids use the money...........

Please check with your friend in Sebring, That would be great!

Thanks to everyone for your help. I wish I had a way that was economical to get to Texas, what you have there is more than perfect. I have considered a type 1 engine and I am not sure why, however they are hard to find around here and when you do find one someone wants $600.00 for a rusted core with the fins broken off of the cylinders, no valve covers, and the engine leaning on the valve-train in the dirt? I have checked with numerous VW specialty shops around here. In this area anyways it has been my experience that a worthless VW core type 1 engine is no longer worthless? I figured since this was the case I would try for a type 4 as that was the first motor I rebuilt myself in 1983 when I was 16. I figured it would kind of bring me full circle with my kids. Thanks again everyone, I appreciate your help.

It sounds like you are looking for a buildable core motor.

Joe at Series 9 might have something available. I think he's in Deland?

Series 9: Porsche, Audi & VW Customs

There's always George in Atlanta, but he's likely to think that Type I you mentioned is severely underpriced... Or maybe Jake from Aircooled Technology, close to Atlanta. Welcome to Raby's Aircooled Technology Web Site

Also look through our Classifieds section, and the (larger) one over on the 914world website.
