special tool?
Where do you get the wrench to hold the tab washers on the tops of the front strut towers?

Pipe wrench, available at most hardware and plumbing stores.

Just out of curiosity, isn't there a special tool for this? I think I remember seeing a wrench with a "tooth" on it to fit in the little notch on the washer. Oh yeah, what can you NOT do with a monkey wrench?

I seem to recall seeing a special tool used in the Haynes book. That said, I used a pipe wrench and pb blaster.

Air hammer will also work well if you loosen the collar before taking the strut out.

Yes, there is a special tool for this. You can probably find it at Baum Tools if you look. A pro Porsche mechanic or a dealer mechanic might use the proper tool. Just about everyone else uses a pipe wrench or an air chisel. (Hi, Brad!) I actually used a large pair of channel-locks because they were handy... But that required two hands to hold, so I had the buddy who was helping me swap the struts loosen the nut while I held the washer.

If you have access to air tools..use an impact wrench. One quick flick of the switch and the nut will be off.
I don't have air, so went to the local tire shop and they loosened the nuts for free. |
