Question Motor Mount Replacement???

Ok, So I get my engine in the car and everything hooked back up and I found that if I try to jack the car up via jack under transmission the driver side motor mount extends. It's like the motor is lifting out and stretching the rubber. Did I hook something up wrong or should I drop the engine *again* and replace my motor mounts???

I could be way off base here, but:

Jacking it that way isn't a good idea is it?

I don't think you have to remove the engine to replace the motor mounts. (you talking about the 2 rubber mounts unde r the motor on the cross bar?)

Hey, I know I'm not much help, but I did get you back to the top.

you can replace mounts with motor in. thanks to DD, i did this about a month ago, instructions "recently" posted. essentially, put car on jack stands, support motor, remove engine mount bar, reach up there and remove top nut on motor mount, remove oil filter to get to nut on passengers side mount. assembly is reverse.

Well, I'm not sure if it is a good idea or not, but when I first got the car thats how we jacked it up and it didn't seem to mind...probably why I'm doing this now come to think of it....

So how do I tell if they need to be replaced? I've heard that its kind of a pain to raplace them with the engine in the car? Thanks

Tail shifter or side shifter? The motor mounting scheme is somewhat different between the two...

I figured out mine (side shifter) were sheared because the engine would WHAM-WHAM-WHAM-WHAM slam up and down on the bar when accelerating hard in 1st gear. Oops.... The gear shift lever also moved around on its own quite a bit when I was on the brakes hard.

my problem was that i placed the jack plate too far forward which put too much "pull" on the old rubber motor mounts (mounts attached to engine mounts pull up on rubber while cross bar pulls down, kinda like stretching a rubber band. pull the rubber band enough, it breaks, just like my motor mounts did :>(
if you place the jack plate behind the clutch on the trans case, you are jacking up using the trans mounts under the trunk more, so less pull on motor mounts ..... yada...... i'm going to use drive on ramps more in future.

Ok, I've done some reading and figured out the difference between the tailshifting and side shifting motor mounts. thing is my car is a side shift and I think that the past owner put the tailshifting style mounts in. There appears to be a rubber mambrane around the point that the bar mounts to the car. I dont remember any rubber where the bar mounted to the engine, but I do recall an excessive amount of space I thought was strange (but there was nothing there when I took it off and so I thought that was the way it went back on).

Should the bar lift out of the point it attaches to the car (at the ends of the bar)??? Or should it be a very solid mount? Thanks guys, I know now that I need at least to get the rubber mounts for the engine now.

A side-shifter should have the curvy cast engine mount. It should have solid mounts at the outboard ends between the bar and the chassis. No rubber. It should have rubber "hockey puck" looking mounts in the middle between the bar and some brackets that bolt onto the crankcase.

The side-shift tranny linkage goes into the transmission through the side of the case, in front of the "intermediate plate". The tail-shifter goes into the tranny through the side of the end cover.

I definatley have a side shifting tranny, and the bar is correct. Since I'm pretty sure the the tail shifting linkage went around the bar (over or under) rather than a hole in the middle if it. I'll take a closer look this weekend ant the mounting points where the bar meets the car though. I remember seeing a rubber membrane streching up as I tried to jack the car up by the tranny.

As far at the "rubber pucks" in the middle of the bar, I'm almost positive I'm gonna need those, I'm just confused on the outer mounts. Does anyone have a picture of a side shifting engine mount bar where it meets the chassi?

I had the same problem...

...except in reverse... I had a side-shift tranny with tail-shift mounting hardware. While correcting this, I took some detailed pictures: Click here to see them.
