new ignition.....
i have a 1973 2.0L stock and have always hated gapping points, setting dwell.... etc. So I am open for upgrade suggestions and recommendations. Yep, I am lazy and would rather do this once ina while rather than with some frequency..... cuts into quality time with kids, wife and detailing!
Thanks, Scott ![]() |

I have used Compufire units on both our 914s for years and NEVER had a problem. Remember to tell them which distributor you have as they have a couple of models. Good luck.

I went for the Mallory distributor and their Hyfire 6 box, plus a new bosch blue coil. Expensive, but I'm hoping it will be worth it in my mildly hopped 2056cc. Haven't installed the motor yet, waiting for spring...

Crane XR-3000 and one of their non-ballasted coils. Works great.

is a pertronix the same as a perlux? My 72 has a perlux, haven't had any problem except the rotor rubs on the unit some. I'm using it with a bosch coil, says 1.8 ohms of resistance. I'm a little worried it's too hot a spark, is that possible?
My 76 has an allison optical, I think they've become the crane xr700. It's been great too. Both of em beat the heck out of adjusting the points and the timing routine. Set it- and forget it PD

and while we are on the subject of ignitions, what kind of Spark plug wires would you recommend? Bosch, I presume? Mine are pretty stiff and brittle, need a new set soon/

I use the 8.5mm Accel universal big-block V8 set and put the ends on with the neat little tool they give with them. You end up with two sets if you buy them that way and the rubber seals do fit over the boots. Good luck.

Yup, the Accel V8 set per advice from John a long while ago. You can get new rubber seals cheap from a vw bug place, plop them in a cup of boiled water to make them pliable and they slide right on. I have four wires left for my next car.

I'd be more inclined to use the Crane (they bought the design from Allison) optical one over the Pertronix (which used to be Perlux). The recent Pertronix seem to have spotty QC. Plus they evidently like to die if you leave the ignition on without the engine running (like to test something) unless you buy the new and more expensive "Pertronix 2"...
No experience with Compufire so far, but I haven't heard any complaints yet. Sounds like it might be similar to a Pertronix with better build quality. --DD
