Can anyone help me identify this muffler?
Hi--
I was told that this muffler is an early 911 muffler or possibly from an 914-6. In either case it is supposed to fit a 911, 914-6 or a conversion 914. Can anyone verify the muffler for me and let me know what it fits? Thanks, --Papermaker ![]()

Guys--
I have an answer, the muffler is off a 1977 911. Thanks, --Papermaker |

Why a 77? I thought that the 75-89 (and later?) cars had the roundy-round exhaust like my wife's SC has, with a single inlet.
The 914-6 muffler is very much like the early 911 muffler (two in, one out) except the tailpipe is in a slightly different location than the 911 one. It is the only one that fits the Six "porthole" rear valence. Interestingly, the 911 muffler's tailpipe fits the 914-4 "porthole" valence or the 72+ 914 "short" valence quite well. --DD

Dave--
I posted on a couple of forums. Here's some of the info posted by others. QUOTE(Papermaker @ May 15 2016, 09:58 AM) * Hi Jeffs9146-- I'm from the "It is better to curse the darkness a thousand times than to light a single candle" group. After looking a couple of times I found part number: BISHOFF 911 . 025 . 00 /0577. Can you tell what this is from and will fit? Thanks, --Papermaker ![]() 1977, 1978 911. The date code is 0577 so it was first installed sometime after that date. It will fit just about anything that was two in one out. You can put it on a 914-6 but the tip will point down low. Some people cut and re-weld the tip to make it fit the rear valance better. |

Papermaker,
I believe that is an OEM replacement (but not OE/genuine Porsche) early 911 muffler. I base this on the following facts: (1) it doesn't have an actual Porsche part number. If it was an actual Porsche part is would be xxx-xxx-xxx-xx. (2) while some 911s in that timeframe did use 2-1 mufflers, it does not have an EGR port that they usually have. Early steel mufflers didn't last very long. For example, 912E mufflers were manufactured for Porsche by bischoff in 1984 as OE replacements to replenish the genuine Porsche parts stock (I own one). |

Hi mb911 and Jrboulder--
Thanks for the input. I bought this muffler as part of a group of 914-6 parts 10 or 15 years ago. I know that several of the parts are genuine -6 parts because I have the engine (6404249), the shroud, alternator, engine harness, transmission mount, etc. The muffler was billed as a -6 muffler. Is it a 916-6 muffler? Thanks, --Papermaker |

With the 911 part number, I'm pretty sure it's a 911 muffler. The PET shows a 901 part number for the 914-6 muffler, interestingly enough.
The only difference between 911 and 914-6 mufflers, as I said earlier, is the position of the tailpipe. And unless you are running an original 914-6 "porthole" valence, the exact position of the tailpipe doesn't really matter. --DD
