914-6 a/c
Attached are some photos of my recently completed installation of a VPC A/C unit in my 914-6. The system uses R-12 and puts out 40 degrees at the vent AND preserves the drivers side heater duct. Total cost of parts and shop labor was approximately $3k, which does NOT count LOTS of my labor. The installation is very clean and is minimally invasive and I will be happy to share details of what was involved with anyone interested. I was a fun and rewarding project. Lots more photos avaiable.

Thanks...a lot of work and $$$ but IT WORKS much better than the factory solution with the 916 of cutting a portion of the firewall...not optimal for a tall driver needing full seat travel!!
The liners are ABS and acquired years ago through an ad in Pano...they work fantastic to keep debris out of the rockers and eliminate a major source of rust! Definitely something that needs to be re-manufactured/marketed in my opinion (along with pivoting sun visor mounts), More photos of the liners front and rear: ![]() ![]() VPC dealer install manual has the receiver dryer mounted in right front wheel well...recommend this location as cleaner, more accessible for servicing. ![]() Apologies for the size of these photos they were sent by the shop doing compressor install. ![]() ![]() |

- maybe i can to hook up with you for discussion at an upcoming SNR or SVR event is that a custom compressor mount, or a factory piece? (i have 2 of the factory mounts)

The mount was customized by Reno Rennsport, based on other examples that had been posted on this site and 914 World. The big difference is we were able to design it in such a way as to preserve the drivers side heater hose. Happy to share additional information with you if you are interested in doing something similar. I will forward my personal email address via a PM.

Scott,
Thanks for the posting. Any more details and pictures would be appreciated. I am looking to embark on this same task this summer with my 914-6 conversion.

thanks, Scott -
looks like you may have both a custom front mount and a custom dual pulley? (the pics of those are too small to see engine mount detail) i've never been able to understand how to modify & fit a dual oem 911 crank pulley into the oem-six mount? and - i never could see the clearance possibilities twixt the oem body mount and an extended front pulley even if one cut the oem engine mount for it (pic below) ? must be a super close fit ? ( do you have a pattern or dimensions to share for that?) oem six mounts being the price of gold, a customized cheap 911 mount might be sensible to think about? presume you also had to customize the front "tin" a bit? or used a cheaper repro part? .. ![]() TIA

Sorry about the size of the photos, they were sent to me by the shop doing the compressor mount fabrication. Yes the front mount is custom, it was my understanding that the dual pulley was from a 911. i've never been able to understand how to modify & fit a dual oem 911 crank pulley into the oem-six mount? To my knowledge their was never an "OEM" mount for a 6. It was my understanding that some of the 916 prototypes had A/C installed using a standard 911 compressor mount and dual pulley which resulted in having to "bump" the drivers side firewall inwards, affecting the position of the drivers seat. The main problem with adapting a 914-4 DPC or VPC aftermarket A/C system (dealer installed option) is to create a mount that avoids interfering with the firewall and preserves the drivers side heater hose. The shop I had do the work was able to accomplish this and I installed the rest of the system using the dealer instructions (in this case for a VPC unit purchased used and reconditioned). Please note that I mounted the receiver/dryer and routed the hoses somewhat differently than the dealer installation guide (see photos). The system was charged by an A/C shop. and - i never could see the clearance possibilities twixt the oem body mount and an extended front pulley even if one cut the oem engine mount for it (pic below) I believe that a "slot" is cut in the mount to accommodate an area for the belt to travel (note that the shop added an separate tension pulley between the compressor and fan pulley). ? must be a super close fit ? ( do you have a pattern or dimensions to share for that?) Seems to have plenty of clearance, there is also enough room to remove the oil filter. I will have to check wit the shop to ascertain whether they saved templates, etc. associated with the fabrication. oem six mounts being the price of gold, a customized cheap 911 mount might be sensible to think about? See prior comment. presume you also had to customize the front "tin" a bit? or used a cheaper repro part? Not sure about this, I would have to examine the front tin. I'm guessing a slight modification was required (see prior comment regarding cutting a "slot") |
