911 oil tank adaptation to 914-6GT

Does anyone out there have experience adapting a 911 oil tank (in fender) to the config. for a 914-6? A decent used 911 version can go for around 50 bucks / a 914 version goes for north of a grand or more depending on weather or not the gold plated dip stick and platinum forged cap is included....

cheers

I've never found one that looks like anything less than a hack job. The issue is they are not the right shape to fit in the 914 fender.

Check with mb911 on the 914world board, he's making a tank at a good pricepoint for what you get.

Agreed....911 tanks are not close to the correct shape to fit in a 914 fenderwell.

The extra space that the GT flares give you might make it work. I'm not sure, frankly.

If you don't want to go with the 914-6 tank, you can use a standard cylindrical tank mounted in one of the trunks. I have also seen a rectangular tank mounted in place of the battery, which was relocated to one trunk or the other.

I totally went through this, get a correct tank or build your own that is for the most part correct.

Daves suggestion, although it will work, will be too high up and over the winter storage will leak down overflowing your crankcase and filling the the cylinders with oil. This won't really hurt anything, but will be a messy PITA when you go to start the engine come spring.
You could put a race sump in the front trunk, but even if you got a used sump cheap running the -12 and minimum return -16 hose from front to back will negate any savings.

Going with a /6 is not a cheap undertaking and most don't realize the engine is only part of the cost. I watched the 914world for sale section and got a new DWD tank, console and filler for $800 a few years back.

This guy (MB911) makes some pretty good repro tanks and filler necks.
Find him on 914World or Ebay (at times).

Foresthaag, I would stick with an original of some type like mb911....reason, the install makes so much sense having all the metal indents already there for you. I just installed one in spring, cutting and fabricating the tank worked so nice....can imagine just cutting holes to make a 911 one work and creating all new oil lines. Best, Mark

914 Dry Sump Tank

If you are in it just for stout functionality, you can't beat the tank from Coleman Racing. Seen it in several 914/6 conversions. Fits in Front trunk.

Dry Sump Tank, 3 Gallon, With Breather Tank

Under $400!

Thanks to all for the input. DD: I have researched the front trunk tank option but do not want to lose the space for my spare and road trip goodies. And tell your pals at PP that this undertaking is not getting any easier on the wallet. What happened to the concept of the "Senior Discount"??...

I am holding out for a mb911 version + all of the ups and extras. Thanks again to all.

Cool I need to make another run of them.. The heat exchanger project has consumed a bunch of time.. But that will make me capable of supplying oil tanks, engine mounts and heat exchangers for six conversions
