Porsche Crest Oil Pump (Newbie Question #349)

Is the correct type 4 oil pump available, I'll buy OEM VW or Porsche if that's what it takes.

(Pelican only list the melling which looks like a TypeI?)

DuckRyder,

I don't have the part number in front of me, but the OEM (VW) pump is still available. I just had one installed on my engine as part of a rebuild. A call to a Porsche/VW parts house should do the trick.

Good luck,

Why would you want an OME vs. one that can pump more oil? (Melling) Remember the engine is OIL cooled.

Well, more is not always better. The OEM one worked fine for many thousands of miles (in fact I could probably stick it back in).

It all depends on you philosophy when you rebuild something do you go for changes that will make it last longer, and run better. Or put it back together as before? That philosophy is like taking a 2.7 911 engine and using the stock chain tension rather than upgrading to the Carrera type.

You know this is what bothers me about forums, I did not ask you what you thought of my philosophy, I asked about stock type oil pumps. Doesn't have a frickin thing to do Carrera chain tensioners.

Now I accept that you may just be trying to help, but accept that I want an OEM oil pump.

You as well, (Don't take it personally, you just managed to be the one that set me off, it's a general complaint)

I use modified cam gears, and modified TI pumps in every engine I build. The stock pump is fine, but with our tolerances on the conn rods it does not have enough volume...

TI all the way.

in a related question, in inspecting my oil filter mount, it seems as though very little pressure opens the bypass ball/valve. I can easily push it in with finger pressure. I was thinking of adding an external cooler/filter but am worried the increased resistance in the line will just make the oil go unfiltered through the engine, and wouldn't the same be true of a high volume pump?
