I'm also uncertain of the input shaft fitment but wanted to make sure that you had thought through the effect of mid-engine 914 versus rear engine Ghia arrangement. Unless you flip the ring gear you will have one gear forward and five in reverse. The 914 transmission nose cone is also going to create some interesting challenges for mounting due to the wide two point mounting pattern. The shift linkage is also going to be problematic.

Have you thought about using an early 911 transmission? Its the same transmission internals as the 914 but has the ring gear in the right orientation for a rear engine installation and has a nose cone and linkage more conducive to your installation.

No. The 914 gearbox and the Type One flywheel clutch are not compatible on their own. A friend of mine did that hybrid in a Porsche 550 kit. He had to go to Kennedy Engineering and have a Type One flywheel modified to accept the 914 input shaft and clutch mounting bolts. He also needed an adapter plate that allowed the 914 box to be bolted to the Type one engine. And don't forget that the mounts of the Type One are also different than the Type Four pieces. You may have to fabricate some mounts to keep everything up in the car.

I was under the impression that the 901-based transmission would actually bolt up to the Bug crankcase, assuming the clutch and flywheel issues were sorted out.

That would give you a car with one very low forward gear, and five much taller reverse gears. Taking apart the transmission and putting it back together with the ring and pinion gears flipped will solve that problem.

Shifting it will be a challenge, though. It will take some very creative work to connect anything even sort of workable to the 914's gear selector mechanism. Even if you get ahold of an early 911 (901) nose-cone, the selector will still be rather lower than the Ghia's shift rod. You might need the 914's gear shift lever; I am not sure the Ghia one plays nicely with the 914 trans.

The 901-based 914 transmission is physically a little larger than the Bug-based Ghia trans. So a little work with a hammer will be required to get it into place.

Here is one article on how it can be done. Seems like a lot of work...
