Synthetic oil?
Hi all,
I'm sure this topic has been covered many times, but I'm new to the site, and a new 914 owner. I was wondering what the best kind of oil to use in a 914 is? I like the idea of synthetic, but I'm not sure about what weight to use. What are everybody's thoughts on this. Thanks,

I use 20/50 non-synthetic. I feel that, no matter what kind of oil you use, it should be changed every 3000 miles. I personally can't justify throwing out the $$ synthetics that frequently.
Also, my engine leaks too much for me to use expensive oil... ![]() I've heard Mobil's Delvac synthetic oil mentioned recently, and that sounds worth investigating. --DD

California guys dont need to be concerned about this unless they go skiing, but the rest of the world does. Don't know when you drive it in Saskatchewan. If you drive it in the winter, you need synthetic. I'd put it in the transmission too. Regular oil just doesn't flow when it's cold. Then again, it thins out when it's hot, so I'd use it as a precaution in an aircooled where oil temps are above 100C regularly.
I use synthetic in everything I own, and it's never let me down. I have 253k on my b4000 mazda Pickup, and I change it whenever it gets a quart down, which is about every 7k miles. Wifes Lexus has 190k and is the same way. The only way I wouldn't use it is if my valve guides were so worn the oil that was sucked past them fouled the plugs, but then I'd want to pull the heads and fix them so I could use synthetic. I guess that makes me on the "believer" side.
