automobile atlanta's rubber kit?
Can anybody tell me their feelings on automobile atlanta $399.00 complete rubber kit? Is it a good reproduction? Or can I get a better product from pp? The car is currently in the body shop being redone from bare metal and I thought while it is being thoroughly redone why not get new rubber.

That is it! Im doing a new 914 FAQ.
Hmmm... where to start.... FAQ . Q. Blah Blah Blah....Automobile Atlanta....yada yada yada. A. Pick one or more, 10. All together now...check the AA posts in the previous threads. 9. Random missing parts from order. 8. Check Pelican first. If its not online call them. Yes, cheaper, better. 7. There is nothing AA has you cant get somewhere else. 6. What price is your sanity? 5. Everyone on the list now knows you have AA parts on your car. 4. The fuzzy warm feeling you get from thier staff 3. Each part arriving 13 days apart. 2. Each part shipped FedEx seperately...at your cost. 1. That slimy feeling that just will not wash off No, I dont think Im being harsh on AA. Warmest Regards, Rich Hilgersom |

Come one Rich!
Tell us what you really think! Buck, seriously. Just about every one of us has run into problems with AA. My biggest issue was with used parts - something I would completely reccomend against, from just about any of the retail suppliers. Does the rubber kit from AA fit better or worse? I know that certain parts, (front targa seal), even from the best suppliers, do not fit properly. I was tempted to buy one of the rubber kits when AA came out with them for $149.00, but I could not bring myself to do business with them, again. Even at $400, they are a good deal, compared to individual parts, if they are the same quality. Which is the crux of the matter. Virtually no one trusts AA anymore. Some of the parts you can get cheaper, if you ask nicely and someone tells you the right "roll" of material to buy. Some are unique. Check around. James I will go to AA when I can't get the part even from the Dealer!

Buck, to actually answer your question, there are a high percentage of the components in the kit that "just don't fit quite right". I know a couple of people that have used it, but have had to supplement some original pieces for the ones that have shortcomings. I'm not sure if the particulars, but I'm sure that someone will chime in soon.
As far as Pelican having a kit, I wouldn't know. It would seem to me that if they had something to sell, they would go through the minimal effort of adding it to their online catalogue. Afterall, they are an online retailer. |

buy a rubber form AA...Lets see...When you need a rubber you need it now...AA would take 90 days...after 90 days you would end up with a "rare" rubber that maybe used, does not fit well, and after you return it will end up on ebay...or it may be just what you need...AA is like a box of chocolate...ya just never know...
oh. not a rubber... but a rubber kit...thats different...never mind.

Check out this link. It looks like AA is trying to lease out part of its lot to raise money.

My first dealings with AA (before I found out about PP) was the purchase of the rubber kit. TO BE EXTREMELY HONEST....the $399 kit was a pretty good deal. Only 1 seal in my kit was not of good quality (front compartment seal?). They did send me 2 of the left targa seal which I had to exchange with no real problems. The kit did not come with the rear targa seal or the one in front of the gas tank (Dr. 914 said they "normally" don't wear out so he doesn't include them). All the seals fit really well and don't leak.
Now, with that said, would I do it again knowing what I know now, 2 years later? Hell no! Give PP a chance! Call Tom or Don and ask for a "box of seals". I bet they will do something for you. Pay these guys, get good parts, get great service and support our addiction. ...off the soap box now....

The AA kit probably didn't include the rear targa seal because its about the most expensive seal on the car. And it does wear out, regardless of what AA may say. That seal is the source of many squeeks and rattles associated with the top. I'd replace mine more often if not for the price!

read between the lines, some trimming maybe required to fit. translation, too long (you hope) & open cell on the foam (read sponge). you get what you pay for.

I've tried to wade through the murky and confusing nuance of all the responses and determine what most of you really think about AA. While it was difficult to really put my finger on the pulse of the group, I have finally come to the conclusion that:
I'd rather wipe my &ss with 60 grit sandpaper than do business with AA. Of course, that's just me...and Mimi says I aint that smart. P.S. A while back I made a buy from one of you (who I have never met).............and when I sent a note to say that I was confirmed on buying the part and would pay via a check...........the response was "I already sent it". Nuff said.

I got off easy
I bought a heater kit fron AA and they claim to have never got the money order ( 11.00, hardly worth chasing). Rather than email me with this concern, they trashed my then-perfect Ebay feedback rating without a peep. You gotta love these guys....
Gosh, Dr 914's medicine show seems to be losing its popularity lately. Probably too many claims of "NOS, we have the last ones of these super rare parts ( but we lost the factory packaging) and get these while they last".....ugh!
