Fuel pump pressure ?
The fuel pump in a 73 1.7 is failing, after a long drive the car stalled. After about 15 minutes it cooled down and started again. I am assuming it is the fuel pump.
It seems there is no original replacement for this pump. Is it possible to replace it with another pump ? What pressure should this pump have ? |

Hello - take a look at the link below to an earlier thread where this is discussed. Hope it helps you out a bit.

Why are you assuming the fuel pump is the problem? Have you checked the fuel pressure when it won't run, versus the pressure when it does run?

The car stalled in three different occasions , the first one took minutes to start again, second one longer and the third one did not start. During the third one, put some gas in the manifold after the air filter, it started and died seconds later. That is why I assumed a faulty pump. I had to leave the car in a warehouse, still had no chance to do other tests.

Sounds like no fuel--but that still does not definitely say bad fuel pump. The fuel pressure would point a more confident finger at the pump, but it could also be the pump control circuitry.

Dave, thanks for your answers.
Now, what should I do ? 1.- Check the fuel pressure. What should be the min and max pressure ? 2.-Could it be a clogged fuel filter ? , Dirty fuel tank ? 3.- How do I check the pump control circuitry ? |

What manuals , books do you recommend to start learning about this car.

The fuel pressure should be 2 bar, basically 29 PSI, the whole time the pump is running. The pump should run for about a second and a half when the key goes from "off" to "on", it should run while the starter is cranking, and it should run when the engine is turning over more than 50 RPM as detected by the trigger points in the base of the distributor. If you don't hear the buzz of the pump when you turn the key on, that definitely indicates a problem.
A fuel pressure problem could be a clogged filter--or more likely the mesh "sock" over the inlet port in the fuel tank--or it could be other problems. Hopefully the following link works. It should display flow charts for troubleshooting the fuel pump circuits: http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders/FPChecklist.htm --DD

Dave,
I can not see the flow charts, I can only see the first page "Fuel Pump Circuit Troubleshooting Flow Charts" . Sent an e-mail to Brad but the e-mail was rejected. By any chance do you have those flow charts ? or an e-mail address where I can contact Bard ? Thank You |

Problem solved, it was a kinked old hose, I assume with the heat of the engine it got soft and it twisted. New hoses are in order.
Pump seems to have the correct pressure. Thanks for all your answers. |
