Question How to figure out bearing size?

OK, I need to find out what size main, and rod bearings to use in my engine. The case will likely not need aline boring, but as far as I know the crank should be pollished(?).

Do you have the crank serviced, and then the case checked to get the sizes, or if the case is true can do you just have the crank serviced and the shop tell you what size to use?

I hope that my question is not to confusing, but I am confused.
Thanks,
Mike

I'm right there with you. I took my case and crank to one shop that chraged $20 clean both (preliminary cleaning, not good enough for final) and check them. He found my case was worn and the crank was on it's 3rd cut for mains and 2nd cut for rods.

Few tips I've since learned:
Make sure the shop uses a dial bore gauge to measure the case. The case should be bolted togehter with the 6 long bearing bolts to torque. You should get numbers for the various bearing saddle diameters.

My crank was pretty worn so I found several on STF classifieds for around $100 that were STD/STD.

If you decide to align-bore (is good and bad) you must provide oversized bearings first. Email Sales@FastGermanAuto.Com -they have them at a good price ($99). RIMCO has them for $125.

Good luck! I hope all checks out great!

You use standard bearings unless crank has been turned or case has been align-bored. Polishing and turning are 2 different things.

Turn the crank if you can catch your fingernail in any groove. Polish if you think it's ready to be put together (no scoring). 10/10 cranks are common, 20/20 still no problem and these bearings don't cost more. Alignbore and you're in for the big dollar bearings.

actually I must confess that this is in regards to my corvair engine. Same principal though, and the STD bearings for these are actually the high priced ones.
