How much oil should my 914-6 hold?
How much oil should my '73 914-6 conversion hold? It has a 3.0L engine, factory oil tank, lines, cooler and NO external oil cooler. So what should it hold?
I put 12 Quarts in it and the dipstick finally says full, but the fillerneck and dipstick is from a '71 911 (is there a difference). Is a 914-6 distick different? Please don't answer if you don't know, too may people respond with "opinions" when I know dam well that something will work.

You are checking with the engine warmed up and running, correct? If so what ever amount it takes is the correct amount.

My 2.4L would take 10 quarts.
The 2.7L with a ex-cooler took 13 initlially, with 11-12 at oil changes. Check the dipstick with the engine warm and running. I like the stick to read half way between "full" and "add".

Length of Dipstick
I'm having a similar difficulty. I suspect that my dipstick might not be the right length.
I have a 914-6 with a stock oil tank (3.2 engine plus external cooler in front trunk). How long should my dipstick be from tip to tip? Mine seems too short. I hope I haven't overfilled the tank. Douglas |

Yes there is a good question for a Factory 914-6 owner: What length is a factory 914-6 dipstick??
Ya I can be a real jerk about peoples opinions but hey I am looking for an informed answer.

Rather than "how long", how far from the stop thingy to the full mark and to the add mark.
I asked this Q the "how long" way once and got an answer that didn't help. I have the "short" stick, also.....humm....genes I suspect

As long as you can see oil on a dip stick, when the engine is warm and you don't suck oil into the intake of the throttle body OR carbs when you do a U turn....you are cool. Typical oil change after intial fill is 11-12 quarts depending if you have an extra oil cooler....

Not to be impatient for a reply but I just found a parts catalogue that has a picture of the stick. See the attached image. Notice that if these parts are to scale, the stick appears to be about 14 to 18 inches long.
Anybody know for sure how long the stick is supposed to be?

People!,
You only have to go back less than a month in this very forum to find the actual answer to the proper 914-6 dipstick. <Time to measure your sticks, boys> Mark S. '70 914-6

mskala, Sorry but you are totally wrong, the link you put up is a description of a type 4 engine, 4cyl, the small engine in the 914 that was built by VW. We are talking 914-6 sorry your info is of no help
I hate to be the bastard of the group but did you guys read the last line of my first post?? Anyone understand why I wrote that line now? I am looking for experienced 914-6 owners or mechanics that actually know what I am talking about. Some of you are a great help, thanks for your informed knowledge.

Did you ever think that you don't get the answer you are looking for BECAUSE you are the "bastard of the group"?
When I see the login "confused" next to a post, I remember that you were kind of a jerk in some past posts. I immediately get defensive and wonder how you will piss someone off this time. There are probably people with the answer you need that will not post it because of your attitude. "You catch more flys with honey than vinegar" If I have wasted precious room on "YOUR POST" feel free to delete the whole thing and start over with a little nicer tone. |

Wow you are brilliant, i miss spelled a work and you are so kind to correct me.
I'm just sorting through the people that respond to this list, trying to find someone that can help. Sorry I just don't need the comments, I thought I was being direct and trying to get my point across. By saying please don't respond if you don't know the answer, I was just trying to cut down on extra posts that always get put up. And what do you know, even though I put that up there was still a post telling me of the size of a Bus type 4 dipstick. Oh well what can I do. The plain old truth is that many knowledgeable People come off as jerks to the amatures, ever walk into a repair shop and get that feeling. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just want a response from some who knows the answer to the question. The same thing has happened in my last posts. So did I spell anything wrong?

Actually Dave, it's just the opposite. I am taking this as a complete joke. Just having fun at a "not real nice" person's expense.
Course, when I owned my auto shop I tried not to make people feel like they were amatures; knowledge does not = jerk for everyone. You can respond, but I will quit after this reply. Last edited by JWest; 03-01-2003 at 02:47 PM.. |

In any event . . .
Thanks, Sergio, for the information. I appreciate the help. I'll go check my stick. And I Will Take Sides : Confused, the worst you can say about Mark S. is that he tried to help us out by showing us a previous thread. He wasn't trying to hurt you, he was trying to help you. So he made a mistake with regard to the kind of dipstick. Big deal. People make mistakes; you don't have to flame him. And even worse than being mean, your flame wasn't even funny. James, good diss on "My opinion is it won't work." Douglas |

Confused,
The short answer to your question is 9 litres, but just a little more if you are changing the filter. This is with no external cooler apart from the one mounted on the engine. How |
