Help! lost 2nd, 4th and reverse!
 

Leaving the office this evening, I was unable to select 2nd, 4th or reverse. Managed to drive the 30 mile journey home using just 1st, 3rd and 5th all of which were very sloppy to select.

I guess the problem is simply linkage, 'cos there's no unusual noises from the gearbox (just the usual bearing whine!).

Has anyone experienced this before? and what was the outcome? Is there anything I should check or align?

was it sloppy to get from first to third??? If so could be synchros, but linkage is most likely. I'm not really sure how to inspect and repair linkage but someone should reply soon that knows. Good luck, sorry to hear about your loss

Yup. Linkage.

It was very difficult to select each gear. To disengage from first, had to pull back to where 2nd usually is before across and forward to third. Same between 3rd and 5th.

look under your car where your shift rod connects to the transaxle. There is a boot that is covering up a bolt. Uncover the boot and check to see if the bolt is in there firm. If it is not it will give you that slop that you are talking about.

Check the shift lever where it bolts to the torque tube also, the holes are slotted for adjusting the angle of the shift lever.

why does my 84 944 not have an adjusting bolt there? is it because it is an early model?

Check the linkage near the transaxle. My car did something similar to yours a few years back. Turns out a bolt came loose in the linkage and I tightened it up and it hasn't been a problem since.

Slide under the rear bumper and you won't even have to jack the car up. :)

Problem solved:

The linkage rod, where it connects to the selector mechanism on the transaxle is covered by a small rubber boot. Inside this boot (at the rear end) is a small circlip. The circlip had come out of its groove and slid an inch or so along the shaft. Circlip appears otherwise ok and was slid back into its groove whilst assistant held shift lever in forward position (3rd).

All now seems ok, but cannot understand why the circlip would have come out of the groove (I don't consider myself to be overly enthusiastic or ham-fisted when gear changing).

Order a new clip and put it on. Most likely stretched the last time the clutch was changed. Also check the shoulder bolts on the stationary cross over link on top of the trans.
