Large coolant leak once thermostat opens
1987 Porsche 944
I can run the car and see nothing leaking until the thermostat opens and coolant floods out of the area by the thermostat housing. Is this a gasket most likely on the thermostat housing? is there a hose the coolant goes into once the thermostat opens? All the coolant will drain in probably a couple of minutes, that's how bad it is leaking. It's very hard to get a visual of where the coolant is running out of. Does the whole water pump need replaced most likely? I would like an idea of what could be the solution before trying to take things apart. Thanks in advance. Hi,
This is a job for a cooling system pressure tester. Pump the system to 10 psi when it is cold and watch and listen for the leak. You will find the big leak. After you fix the big leak, retest the system to find all the small leaks you didn't even know that you have. I agree that it can be hard to find the exact location of a coolant leak when it is spraying out hot. My local Autozone loaned these out. I got one from HF that works okay for how much I use it. Good luck, Peter |

The thermostat is in the waterpump. If leaking there the block off plate may be the problem.
Take the radiator cap with you to make sure the tester kit has the correct sized adapter. Lots of times the kits are incomplete and missing just the adapter you need. |
