No Start no good
Hello Everyone!!!
![]() I just did my clutch hydraulics for the for the 4th time and Blinky will not start to leave the garage. I am suspecting it just likes the garage and the evidence to support this theory continues to mount up. I tried replacing the DME relay for the quick fix, but, Alas, it still does not start. It cranks well, the timing marks are on, I tried either, got no response. So.... checked for spark and dont seem to be getting any. . I checked voltage to the coil and both terminals read 12 volts. hmmmm... is that right? The tach is a little bouncy so, there is that. Where to go from here? is there a no start sticky or flowchart? Thanks for your help guys. Happy Day!

Check the two connectors for the crank reference sensors. They are right against the firewall in the middle, above the back of the engine. These connectors don't work very well, and I've had intermittent problems with them over the last year. Usually if I jiggle them or plug-and-unplug them the car will then work. I plan to eventually just replace them altogether with some newer-style connectors (or just directly splice the wires).

Possible that this is caused by the ignition switch.

ongoing.
I guess it is possible that it is a switch... after crawling through some threads and clarks I came to the conclusion that tach bounce indicates the ECU is good and reading sensors, right?
I did the coil test per clarks and tapped the coil ground to ground and got some impressive sparks from the grounding wire and less impressive sparks from the at the distributor end of the coil, not sure if i am doing it right. Why does my 30 year old sports car keep breaking?

Clarks Garage has a pretty good troubleshooting guide for "Cranks, but no Fire"

OK, put it all back together again and cranked it for giggles. it started and IDLED for about 5 seconds before dying again.. I GUESS that is a positive sign. Pulled off the air cleaner and tried starting it on either, nope.

coil test
coil tests 5.6 K ground to plug wire and 1.1 ohm ground to positive. Clarks says ground to positive should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. Am I correct in assuming the coil is "weak"? and getting another?? AND, will any good 12V coil work for testing or will I need a fancy Bosh, made for Porsche coil?

Not a bad idea to try it, but .4 ohms difference could be in your meter quite possibly.

yea, well, spark is pretty weak looking when I short the neg to ground, not even a quarter inch and white, usually jumps half inch and blue-ish. using Clark's Garage Home Page as ref, and gonna hunt up another coil just to test with. Coil seems to be original 1987, so, I really cant gripe about anything. Not sure how long they are supposed to last, but, thinking 30 years is an outside range.

The spark at the plugs should be blue. It is weak if orange or yellow. Use an extra plug at the spark plug wire lead and use an aligator cable to ground it, crank and observe the spark color.

What is the status of the engine ground? I have a thread detailing this problem on PP...

I win!
It lives!, went over the connections, fresh set of plugs, replaced coil and life is good.
not really sure what it WAS, but moving forward and not looking back. ![]() Happy Day
