Trans Coupler Threads Stripped
Well, I learned a valuable lesson; always get both transmission coupler bolts started before doing final tightening on either of them. I tightened down the front bolt before turning the engine over to do the rear, and it must have been far enough off that I sheared the threads off on the rear bolt against the sides of the groove. Can't really think of another explanation.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/swUqzG.jpg What are the chances the threads in the coupler are still good? I *really* don't want to have to drop the trans again. I'm a slow worker. Any way I can test them without risking getting a new bolt stuck? |
Threads will be fine. Get a new bolt and get them both started before tightening, like you mentioned.

Yep done this a few times. Coupler is fine

It's good to hear I'm not the only one to commit this gaffe. Thanks, guys!

Yeah, get the alignment perfect before doing rear bolt.
With the front bolt tightened, you can actually pry on square block to shift driveshaft fore-aft so hole of 2nd bolt is perfectly clear. I use a motorcycle tyre lever. |
Also put that coupler in a vice or something else to secure and clean the threads with tap.

I believe the manual recommends to replace these bolts as they one-time use (micro-encapsulated).
