Ignition problem with 944

I have a 1988 944. After car reaches operating temperature and is shut off for 30 or 40 minutes it may or may not start. Sometimes it will start after numerous attempts. Other times it may not start until the nex day. Only one time has it quit while running. It will always start after setting overnight. When it fails to start the motor turns over but it will not fire. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would check the wiring to and the crank sensors (900-1000 ohms)also check the DME relay (or replace) this can fail when warm and prevents the injectors from opening and the fuel pump from spinning.

Jim,
I had the same problem with my '86 944. I never found the problem but cooling it down a bit was the answer. Putting Red Line Water Wetter in the cooling system (drain down some coolant and put it in the radiator, not the overflow tank) drops the temp a few degrees and installing a new thermostat that brings on the fan 20 degrees earlier, did the trick.
After many frustrating afternoons stuck in parking lots etc., I discovered that the car would start easily by rolling it down an incline and popping the clutch. So, the malady didn't affect the car starting (if you push it) but it wouldn't start at all using the starter. I will bet your car is doing the same - try it!
