85.1 944 with factory sport suspension: shocks & struts

I have a fairly original early 944 with factory sport suspension. Shocks and struts are needing replacement.

It looks as if the rears are original - I can see yellow under the 35 years of dirt - so it's possible the fronts are original as well.

Does it make sense to have these rebuilt? Are these factory "sport" Koni shocks & struts available new?

Thanks,
Tom

Koni can rebuild them. That's what I'd do.

Check your options code decal, if they are original “sports” versions then you’ll have either M030 or M474 as an option code.

It's actually the M456 option code (also M220 for LSD).

From my research, the springs are allegedly shorter, so would need shorter shocks/struts(?)... Lots of conflicting information out there on these early sport suspension optioned cars.

Gotcha, iirc M456 was a package for early cars including sways and sports shocks. The sways are easy to look up but the shocks I can’t help you with. Are they simply valved differently or are they single/double adjustable? I don’t have much experience with early cars. I’ve heard people get the 030/474 rebuilt by True Choice (no affiliation), might be worth giving them a call and quote them the part numbers to see what they can do for you.

It’s in two places, first page of the service book and attached to the car between the rear tail lights under the hatch carpet.

Thanks. When I replaced the shocks and struts I got the standard OEM type and I'd hate to find out it had a suspension option I should have known about. It's still in winter storage, so I'll find out later....

Thanks Mike - I'll check out True Choice.

I these may be adjustable, but require removal to make adjustments? I won't be sure until I get them out.

Tanks again,
