Oops, I should have started a new thread about rotor plates

After years of using Pelican and getting flamed for not searching hard enough, I think members are finally more forgiving if you don't revive an old thread and start a new thread instead.

Here was my earlier post to another thread about rotor protector plates. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/10485548-post12.html . Feel free to post in either one.

different car but, i ripped them off the back of my Subaru to do a big-brake conversion.

i think they're more dust/splash shields than anything. the pads are always in contact with the rotor so i think it unlikely (Not impossible) for a rock or something to get in there.

I think I'm going to try going without them

I agree that the risk seems low that something bad will happen to the brakes if they aren't on there. I'm not too worried about the cosmetics of dust, etc.. I can always put them back on if it presents a problem. Deleting them almost certainly reduces the captured heat. Thanks for your input.

I would look into the air flow into the center of the vented rotor with or without the shield. The rotor is basically a fan with vented setup.

Good thought

I've never seen them on a race car which made me think they had a street car purpose. Anyone else want to weight in on that?

The brake rotors vent through the circumference to the center and out towards the wheels, not towards that shield. On a street car that shield prevents a lot of water splashing up onto the rotors and degrading the brakes. I’d leave them on unless it’s a dedicated race car in which case extra cooling is more of a priority and the rear is really the only viable place to duct it too.

yes, the air being 'sucked in' to the rotor comes through the holes near the center of the backing plate. heat management, if you will.

Glad I asked ...

That makes perfect sense. Fortunately I'm not too far along so it's not hard to put them on. Thanks again guys.

the later, non-serviceable, front lower control arms have attachment holes for the 968 style brake scoops. great for bunnies and other indecisive varmints.
